This position exists in the Resource Management and Assistance Division, Small Business and Community Assistance Unit to provide multi-media compliance and pollution prevention assistance to Minnesota small businesses. This position provides one-on-one assistance to small businesses. The position also develops and provides proactive sector initiatives, educational materials and training to businesses. Professionals in this unit demonstrate initiative, creativity and passion to help small businesses reduce greenhouse gases and contribute to advancing Minnesota’s climate change framework.

Minimum Qualifications

Environmental Specialist 1

Two years of environmental protection experience OR

A Bachelor's degree in environmental protection or related science field. (Students in their final semester of college should apply for the position and can start after their graduation date.)

Environmental Specialist 2

Three years of environmental protection experience OR

A Bachelor's degree in environmental protection or related science field AND one year of professional environmental protection experience. (Students in their final semester of college should apply for the position and can start after their graduation date.)

Both:

Ability to manage multiple projects.

Ability to gain understanding of the environmental regulator process and state and federal rules.

Basic computer skills with proficiency in Word and exposure to Excel and PowerPoint.

Good communication and human relations skills to interact effectively with stakeholders and team members.

Preferred Qualifications

Strong customer service ethic and human relations skills to interact effectively with small business contacts, stakeholders and team members.

Project management experience handling multiple tasks and deadlines; ability to be a self-starter who can initiate projects, manage them and lead them to their conclusion.

Ability to gradually obtain expertise and competency in understanding and applying Federal and state environmental laws and regulations.

Problem solving, planning, organizational, and computer skills.

Solid communication (written and verbal) skills; ability to summarize technical information into documents and presentations.

An entrepreneurial attitude towards general assistance, compliance issues and pollution prevention; ability to plan, develop, and present training on a range of topics using a variety of tools and methodologies.

Students who have participated in one of the state or agency’s student leadership pipeline programs such as Right Track, Step Up, Urban Scholar, Star of the North, Increasing Diversity in Environmental Careers or Minnesota GreenCorps are encouraged to apply.

Physical Requirements

Requires occasionally lifting and/or carrying such articles as file folders, ledgers, and small equipment. Although a sedentary job is defined as one which involves sitting, a certain amount of walking and standing is often necessary in carrying out job duties.

Additional Requirements

Position duties may require travel but driving is not a minimum qualification or essential function of this position. Employees who may drive for state business will need their driver’s license checked prior to operating a state vehicle.
