National Grid System Access Manager in Warwick, United Kingdom

About the role

Join National Grid Electricity Transmission (NGET), the heart of energy in the UK, and play a pivotal role in shaping the nation's power system. Our network powers the nation, enabling businesses to thrive, schools to educate, and bringing energy to every aspect of life. As the backbone of the country's energy infrastructure, our network connects communities, making it essential for us to continually evolve, advance, and improve.

As System Access Manager, you’ll lead a team of Power Systems, Ratings and Optimisation Engineers to oversee the management of the Electricity Transmission (ET) outage plan to safely enable £bns of investment. This will cover strategic and tactical timeframes, supporting the work to be delivered across the business to maximise resource productivity, utilisation and plan delivery, whilst ensuring a secure and reliable network. The ET system access plan must support cost, risk and performance outcomes.

Taking a longer-term view of the portfolio of planned work, you’ll ensure that targets and expected outcomes and objectives are met through a robust, deliverable access plan. You’ll liaise across multi-disciplinary teams to ensure the plan is deliverable and that business outcomes are met, acting as the first point of escalation for ET system access challenges.

You’ll work closely with the Electricity System Operator (ESO) holding them to account for the provision of agreed access across all timescales. Acting as regular liaison with ESO and across the wider ET business, you’ll enable knowledge exchange and keep up to date as the network evolves to meet net zero.

This role is based out of our offices in Warwick and can be combined with hybrid working from home.

What you'll need

Educated to Degree level in electrical engineering (or equivalent), and preferably a higher degree or qualification in power system engineering, you’ll have a thorough knowledge and understanding of the operational or planning requirements of the Electricity Transmission System and its assets through experience in planning, design and/or delivery of work associated with transmission level plant and equipment.

You’ll have a strong understanding of power system theory and its practical application to electricity networks, coupled with a good understanding of network assets and their capabilities.

Knowledge and experience of system access planning for a complex electricity network is key, as is the ability to apply and interpret the Cost, Risk and Performance prioritisation framework.

A strong understanding of existing UK regulatory frameworks and their application to the context of network planning and system access to drive consumer and business benefits is also essential.

In addition, we’re looking for someone with experience of the following:

  • Building and sustaining relationships within a technically- focussed environment and across the industry.

  • Coaching and developing technical skills of professional engineers across power system topics.

  • Presenting detailed technical information in a way understandable to non-technical audiences.

  • A competitive salary of £61,000 - £74,000

  • Annual Performance Based Bonus of up to 15%

  • 28 days annual leave plus eight statutory days

  • Option to buy/sell holiday days

  • Generous contributory pension scheme – we’ll double-match your contribution to a max company contribution of 12%
