National Grid Senior Regulatory Strategy Manager - Distribution System Operator in Warwick, United Kingdom

About the role

We’re looking for a Senior Regulatory Strategy Manager to join our Distribution System Operator (DSO) team) to develop and deliver our medium to long-term strategic direction in the context of the changing regulatory landscape.

You will shape the strategic ambition and growth of the DSO working across the DSO leadership team, the wider National Grid Electricity Distribution (NGED) Executive team and National Grid Group-level teams (e.g. Corporate Strategy, UK Regulatory Strategy, Corporate Affairs).

A fundamental part of this role will involve establishing and maintaining a broad network of internal and external contacts to influence and define key regulatory changes that impact the DSO.

There is the opportunity to build a small team (2-3) of strategic experts that are embedded with the core DSO teams that will drive and deliver regulatory change and help create the future strategic vision of the DSO.

We offer a hybrid working approach which consists of a mixture of home and office working, with frequent travel to Bristol, London and the Midlands for meetings.

Our standard working week is 37 hours, though we can also offer some flexibility in terms of hours / times if needed.

We can offer flexibility on where the role is based with locations in one of our Electricity Distributions Offices across the Midlands, Southwest and South Wales.

What you'll be responsible for

• Understanding the commercial, political and competitive environment that DSOs are operating in and identify how to generate value (shareholder and consumer) from a regulatory perspective

• Using regulatory insight, develop the medium to long-term DSO strategy working collaboratively with DSO teams and the wider NG Group (e.g. Corporate Strategy)

• Managing and coordinating the DSO’s regulatory position on key industry reform projects (e.g. Regional Energy Strategic Planners), working across internal and external stakeholders to influence regulatory reform that supports the DSO’s strategic ambition. This includes identifying links and cross-cutting issues across the National Grid Group, and obtaining alignment with other business units (e.g. National Grid Electricity Transmission)

• Leading on all on regulatory consultations that impact the future regulation of the DSO, coordinating with NGED Regulation and UK Regulation where required

• Shaping and influencing the DSO’s positive relationship with Ofgem, working closely with NGED Regulation and National Grid Group

• Managing and coordinating the annual DSO Panel Report submission and Ofgem panel assessment process

• Lead the DSO’s input into future regulatory price control developments

• Lead a high-performing team that provides high quality qualitative & quantitative insight to support strategy development and execution

About you

• A regulation expert, with experience of developing and interacting with regulatory frameworks either in the energy sector or other heavily regulated environment such as water, telecoms or financial services.

• A strong strategic thinker, with the ability to see the big picture, but also address shorter term more tactical issues.

• Significant experience of strategy formulation and analysis in large and complex regulated environments

• Ability to work with and influence board, executive level and senior leaders within an organisation, and engage effectively at multiple levels across an organisation.

• Ability to challenge entrenched thinking in a constructive manner; a willingness and openness to receiving similar challenge

• Ability to lead and coach a team to allow them to meet their full potential

• An excellent communicator who can translate complex, technical concepts into easily digestible plain English

A competitive salary of £80,000 - £100,000 dependent on experience.
