Senior Converter Engineer

Hybrid position

National Grid Electricity Transmission creates value from its assets. This role will work with our asset strategy teams and oversee the scoping, development, delivery and first-line technical assurance for new HVDC Converter assets supporting our growing HVDC technology portfolio.

The principal value created by this role is the identification and management of HVDC Converter technology opportunities and risks so that the SI HVDC portfolio is suitably managed. This will be achieved by the development, implementation, and management of new HVDC Converter engineering strategies, processes and capabilities.

What's in it for you?

A competitive salary of £55,000 p.a. to £80,000 p.a. depending on experience.

In addition to your annual salary, you will also receive;

• Bonus, you will receive an annual bonus of up to 15% of your salary for stretch performance

• Pension - We offer a generous pension scheme, where we double match, which means for every £1 you contribute, we’ll put in another £2. We will pay a maximum of 12% into your pension when you pay 6%. That gives you a total 18% into your pension every month.

• Company Car, Dependant on the mileage completed for business travel per year, you may be eligible for a company car. We'll give you a monthly voucher value so you can select a car from the company car choice list. You can trade your company vehicle up or down by a maximum of 25% with a voucher value of £470.

• Annual Leave - 26 days annual leave, alongside the option to buy an additional 5 days.

There is also the option to use up to 3 bank holidays flexibly, With the aim to provide employees the ability to take holidays that are personally meaningful to them. Up to three of the eight public/bank holidays will become “flexible” allowing employees to request to work on a holiday and swap the time off for another day during their leave year

Our Sharesave plan is a three or five year savings scheme where you can buy shares at the end of the period at a reduced price. You can buy Partnership Shares each month through our Share Incentive Plan, and become a shareholder and receive dividends

Eligible employees are entitled to full pay for the first 26 weeks of maternity, adoption, surrogacy or shared parental leave, or two weeks full pay for paternity leave. If you have caring responsibilities, we offer up to six emergency backup care days each year for when your usual care arrangements fall through. What you'll be getting up to

  • Act as a subject matter expert on the management of HVDC Converter activities supporting our new transmission assets, noting this applies to land and marine HVDC Converters.

  • Ensure the efficiency, effectiveness and sustainability of HVDC Converter solutions –physical assets, digital assets and their associated design, construction and maintenance methodologies.

  • Inspire and influence both internal and external stakeholders to realise acceptable outcomes.

  • Create and support the implementation of an engineering capability growth plan.

  • Account for business risk: time/cost/quality/safety and provide assurance that HVDC Converter engineering activities are within business tolerance.

  • Identify and drive innovation in line with the strategic direction.

  • Lead and shape National Grid’s relationships with key external stakeholders (e.g. regulators, professional bodies, suppliers, international engineering institutions, academic institutions).

  • Establish and maintain a network of thought leaders to establish market trends and facilitate convergence of ideas as appropriate.

  • Technical authority in area of specialism demonstrably balancing quality, safety, cost and delivery.

  • Expert knowledge recognised in business area, across the company.

  • Experience of working with procurement and suppliers to introduce new ways of working and sustainable products.
