National Grid’s Graduate Development Program (GDP) is a year-long development program for recent college graduates who aspire to take on future leadership roles in a dynamic, ever-changing industry. Graduates will shape the future of National Grid. Bringing fresh thinking, new perspectives, and exploring with energy, we’ll give you real responsibility and an opportunity to move with purpose from day one – putting the power to supercharge your career in your hands.

Graduates start their careers at National Grid with an in-depth 3-week in-person Orientation which gives you exposure to all parts of the company, allows you to network with your Graduate cohort, GDP alumni, and senior leaders, and provides you with the opportunity to travel throughout our service territory in the northeast US. Following Orientation, you’ll begin working in full-time position outlined below and take part in ongoing development activities including quarterly development sessions, active mentorship, and a Hackathon Project.

Information Technology and Digital Graduate Rotations

Graduates in our IT & Digital team will take part in an 18-month exploration. Your first 6-months will be in the role outlined below and you will return to this role following two broadening 6-month placements (in closely related fields such as Data Science, Data Engineering etc.) designed to provide you a breadth of experience within your functional area and accelerate your progression at National Grid. These placements will provide you with the opportunity to solve complex problems and focus on growth that will transform the energy sector as we know it.

About the Position

As an Associate Machine Learning Engineer on the National Grid Data Science team, you will develop data pipelines, take data science prototype models to production, fix production bugs, monitor operations and standup the necessary infrastructure in Azure.

This is a hybrid role with 1 day per week in the Waltham, MA office.

What You'll Do

  • Work on Machine Learning projects in collaboration with senior members of the team.

  • Work with data scientists to understand their data needs and put together data pipelines to ingest data.

  • Work with data scientists to take data science model prototypes to production.

  • Enhance and improve the code deployment and model monitoring frameworks and project operations documentation.

  • Design, provision and maintain the cloud infrastructure needed to support Data Engineering, Data Science, Machine Learning Engineers, and Machine Learning Operations.

  • Write high quality code that has high test coverage.

  • Participate in code reviews to help improve code quality.

  • Work closely with IT to stay up to date on upcoming changes to National Grid's infrastructure.

  • Technologies/Tools we use: Python, SQL, Azure (Virtual Machines, Azure Web Apps, Cloud Storage, Azure ML), Anaconda packages, Git, GitHub, GitHub Actions, Terraform, Artifactory, Airflow, Docker, Kubernetes, Linux/Windows VMs.

What You'll Need

  • Bachelor’s degree in computer science, data science, and/or related quantitative degree is preferred from an accredited institution.

  • Rock solid foundational knowledge of Python and ideally some industrial experience in the language.

  • Graduated between May 2024 and June 2025

  • Ability to begin the National Grid Graduate Program on June 2, 2025, or July 7, 2025

  • Valid US driver’s license

  • Applicants for the Graduate Development Program must have work authorization that does not now or in the future require sponsorship of a visa for employment authorization in the United States (such as sponsorship for an H-1B, TN, O, L, STEM OPT, or other employment-based work authorization)

Salary Range

Waltham, Massachusetts $77,000 - $99,000 a year

Please note US Colleagues must reside within our existing footprint, which includes Massachusetts, New York, New Jersey, Pennsylvania, Connecticut, New Hampshire, Maine, Rhode Island and Vermont. As a National Grid employee, you should also reside within a reasonable, commutable distance to your assigned primary office.
