Job Summary:

The Sr. AI Platform Engineering and Operations Director is a technical specialist who brings broad experience to the creation of WellSense’s AI strategy and implementation. This position serves as a connection point between the IT groups of Enterprise Data, Applications, AI Solution Delivery and Enterprise Architecture as well as between the IT Engineering, Data Science, and Business ends of WellSense. This individual will work closely with the VP of Enterprise data cloud and SVP of AI and Automation to ensure the integrity of the AI infrastructure, deployments, monitoring, availability, scalability, cost controls and ultimately sustained value delivery.

The role will play a crucial AI role in setting direction, evaluating and configuring tooling, developing, deploying and monitoring how WellSense effectively deploys AI-enabled solutions at scale for its business stakeholders. The position requires a deep understanding of modern cloud computing platforms, especially AWS, and requires deep experience at deploying a significant number of AI solutions effectively and at scale in AWS over an extended period of time based on a coordinated platform approach. The role also requires a deep understanding of the Data Scientist role as the Data Scientist will be a keep stakeholder in how effective AI Operations are in driving business value.

This role will be the most senior leader in AI Platform Operations with accountability for AI Platform Operations strategy, deployment, Dev Ops, Model ops, and AI operating cost controls. This role must also be forward looking and is expected to research and stay abreast of industry trends, and will continuously audit the WellSense landscape to identify opportunities to improve our AI Platform and Operations.

Key Functions/Responsibilities:

• Strategy and Vision:

• Lead the development and articulation of a comprehensive AI/ML Platform Operations approach aligned with the overall business objectives and leveraging resources across WellSense.

• Focus on setting direction, evaluating and configuring tooling, developing, deploying and monitoring how WellSense effectively deploys AI-enabled solutions at scale for its business stakeholders.

• Collaboration:

• Be a liaison with AI Engineers, Data Scientists and IT Leadership to understand their needs and challenges, and ensure AI Solutions can be quickly deployed in a stable, scalable and repeatable fashion with high levels of performance while balancing underlying costs

• Collaborate across departments to be ready to enable cost effective, repeatable and scaled advanced AI solutions as WellSense is ready to deploy them.

• Technology Development and Implementation:

• Create, enable and deploy capabilities and patterns to deploy and manage a series of changing AI solutions in a coordinated ‘platform’ approach to optimize labor and tech costs and drive quicker speed to value for new AI Solutions.

• Stay current with advancements in AI/ML and automation technologies and assess their applicability to the organization in particular AWS and competitive Cloud provider offerings.

• Establish Patterns of AI solution pipelines and participate in the evaluation of any Automation solutions targeted for use.

• Data Governance and Quality:

• Work closely with data management teams to ensure data infrastructure supports AI/ML initiatives.

• Regulatory Compliance:

• Ensure that AI/ML and automation practices comply with relevant regulations and ethical standards.

• Stay informed about legal and ethical considerations in AI/ML, advocating for responsible and transparent practices.

• Participate in and enable Responsible Use of AI policies and Measurements as a feature of each deployment

Qualifications:

Education Required:

· Bachelors or master’s degree in computer science, engineering, or related science field or demonstrated work experience in the field.

Experience Required:

· 7+ years of experience in artificial intelligence and machine learning with some level of Generative AI experience

· 3+ years of experience deploying or leading the deployment on AI solutions on AWS

· Leadership of the deployment of more than 10 production-use AI solution on AWS using a platform approach that captures economies of scale not possible with individual deployments

· Hands on expertise in the AWS AI technical stack and proven experience distinguishing the pros/cons of competing approaches to common problems encountered

· Ability to compare tool stack options and make clear data-backed recommendations.

Experience Preferred/Desirable:

· Leadership of the deployment of more than 10 production-use AI solution on AWS using a platform approach that captures economies of scale not possible with individual deployments

· Hands on expertise in the AWS AI technical stack and proven experience distinguishing the pros/cons of competing approaches to common problems encountered

· Ability to compare tool stack options and make clear data-backed recommendations.

· Proven ability to manage teams of employees and contractors to drive results.

· Understanding of the ethical application of AI/ML in Healthcare.

Required Licensure, Certification or Conditions of Employment:

· Successful completion of pre-employment background check

Competencies, Skills, and Attributes:

• Proven ability to lead the deployment of production-use AI solution on AWS using a platform approach that captures economies of scale not possible with individual deployments.

• Hands on expertise in the AWS AI technical stack and proven experience distinguishing the pros/cons of competing approaches to common problems encountered.

• Healthcare Industry experience deploying AI Solutions at production scale.

• AI deployment and operations strategy development and business case creation.

• Demonstrated success in leading AI/ML functions and delivering AI/ML capabilities.

• Experience in the planning and execution of the creation of AI/ML models.

• Experience in leading, growing, and maintaining high performing teams.

• Demonstrated experience with collaborating with technical and non-technical stakeholders.

• Willingness to get hands-on in the execution of the team’s work.

• Effective communicator who is comfortable presenting to junior staff through senior-level executives.

• Knowledge of cost estimation and budgeting as it relates to cloud management

Working Conditions and Physical Effort:

• Ability to work outside of normal business hours as needed

• Regular and reliable attendance is an essential function of the position.

• Work is normally performed in a typical remote home office work environment.
