National Grid Strategic Investment Planning Manager in United Kingdom

About the role

We are looking for a Strategic Investment Planning Manager to join our Infrastructure Development Team at National Grid. This is a hybrid role and will involve travel to our head office in Warwick once a week, but we welcome applications from across England and Wales.

Infrastructure Development is a new team set up to support a number of new capabilities to the business. The energy landscape is evolving rapidly. Industry and political factors present uncertainty behind our decision making especially in our early investment planning. You will help drive transformational changes required for NGET to successfully navigate this new external environment and ensure the right investment choices in our network.

You will manage a central view of network drivers for the business helping make better longer term, coordinated whole system decisions. The role will require you to establish strong relationships with stakeholders both internally and externally to provide necessary insight and help guide investment decisions that provides the best optimal outcome for National Grid Electricity Transmission (NGET) and long-term, consumer value. You will work closely with development and asset operations colleagues to ensure sites with more complex needs into the future are accounted for and co-ordinated alongside other drivers to help manage risk levels on the network.

NGET is at the heart of energy in the UK and in meeting the governments net zero energy ambitions. We need to maintain our high standards of energy security and reliability whilst undertaking an ambitious upgrade and expansion of our transmission network to connect renewable generation and meet increasing demands.

What you'll be doing

  • Be accountable for creating and maintaining a central point for Electricity Transmission (ET) to view network drivers.

  • Overlay of load and non-load network drivers for the regions to identify synergies and whole system opportunities at strategic level.

  • Understand advancements in ‘whole system’ considerations to inform our regional strategies. This will be a research and development related task.

  • Ownership of a codification framework to inform site intent, giving the ability to make repeatable and automated strategic level decisions using network driver data.

  • Work with Network Development and stakeholders (internal & external) to identify optimum electrical design options for sites/regions.

  • Work closely with the AO site strategy & IDD development team to help manage long term investment and network risk management plans

  • Establish effective communication channels and coordination processes with technical stakeholders

  • Key interface with the Digital Teams across ET, supporting change and leading digital development initiatives for the team (ET Driver & visualisation tools, Future Network Blueprint digital database etc.).

  • Creating analytics and ways of understanding investments at strategic timeframes to driver continuous improvement and alignment with strategic objectives

  • Develop/support early business case information for investments.

  • Provide audit & governance against processes used to build our strategic investments in the 4.0 space of BP500.

  • Provide insight and alignment with wider ET transformation activities and changes in work management

What you'll need

  • Qualification or relevant experience of HV Power System engineering and/or analysis

  • Strong knowledge of power system theory and its practical application to network design/optioneering

  • Understanding of National Grid Electricity Transmission HV transmission assets

  • Understanding of the RIIO regulatory price control processes, relevant funding mechanisms and customer connections processes.

  • Good knowledge of the electricity industry including a thorough understanding of how this impacts National Grid

  • Advanced stakeholder management - collaborating successfully across ET with the ability to build good relationships at all levels within the business.

  • Experience of working with external regulatory bodies, relevant industry groups and customers

  • Project/change management - experience in embedding and sustaining new processes
