National Grid Overhead Lines Craftsperson (Farnham, Surrey) - Advanced Apprentice in United Kingdom

About The Role

*On this apprenticeship you will be working towards a Level 3 Power Network Craftsperson qualification.  *

*You will also be paid over £21,000 a year while you train, with free food, accommodation, and travel.  *

Our three-year Advanced Apprenticeship will train you to become a craftsperson providing site support to our Overhead Line network. As an Advanced Apprentice Overhead Lines Craftsperson you will be tasked to undertake a wide range of duties whilst working at height on OHL Assets including fault investigation, repair, safe and reliable operation and routine inspections. You will be working outside in all weathers to ensure the safe and efficient operation of the Electricity Transmission system.

In order to promptly address critical operations, it's vital to be within a 45 minute proximity of the GU10 5RT postcode

Whilst on programme an Advanced Apprentice Craftsperson can typically expect to;

• Work in accordance with safe practices and procedures, carry out risk assessments including checking the structures to be climbed and the working conditions while working at height.

• Climb steel towers to install, maintain, test, repair and dismantle overhead line plant and equipment safely at height, solving problems in an organised and practical way.

• Drive vehicles equipped with tools and materials to remote job sites.

• Safely operating plant and equipment such as winches, Telehandlers and MEWPs.

• Shadow experienced linesperson to gain new skills and knowledge whilst in the field.

• Gain new skills and knowledge via training at our Nottinghamshire based training centre.

• Working outdoors in a variety of locations.

• Work as an enthusiastic team player to achieve challenging tasks.

• Receive Health and Safety training leading to role specific authorisations.

• Be away from home and work in a variety of zones/geographical area to develop skills.

About You

You are driven and proactive, with an appetite for continuous improvement. You know how to build on your existing knowledge and skills and have the enthusiasm to run with things and to try to make them better. You’re articulate and know how to communicate appropriately with different people.  

You are a flexible multitasker who can do multiple jobs at the same time and still pay great attention to detail. It’s doesn’t matter if you’re not academically dazzling; we want practical people with engineering mindsets who are really keen to apply themselves.  

*Our Advanced Apprenticeships are for people who have five GCSEs, including passes in Maths and English graded 4/C or above. *

*By the end of your first year, you’ll need a driving licence that permits you to drive in the UK.  *

*You must be able to live away from home; primarily at our Eakring academy. *

What You'll Get

After all of this fantastic training and experience, you will want to spend the next few years putting this all into practice and continuing to build on your technical capability acquiring further technical certificates and qualifications.

The Power Network Advanced Apprenticeship is a level 3 programme designed to provide the skills and knowledge to work in the specialist area of expertise within the power network industry and develop apprentices into skilled craftsperson’s within Electricity Transmission. From there your opportunities within National Grid are endless, with a wide range of potential career options.

You will receive a starting salary of £21,164 as well as 26 days' holiday. You will also have access to a number of additional benefits such as a competitive pension scheme as well as free full board accommodation whilst at our academy and we’ll cover travel costs associated with your training too.
