National Grid Head of Delivery in United Kingdom

About the role

We have a fabulous new opportunity for a Head of Delivery to join our Infrastructure Development and Delivery (IDD) team in our Electricity Transmission (ET) business, working specifically on our Hinkley Connection Project.

National Grid’s Hinkley Connection Project is a 57km, high voltage electricity connection between Bridgwater and Avonmouth. It will bring low carbon, homegrown energy to six million homes and business across the UK, including from Hinkley Point C, EDFs new power station in Somerset. It features the world’s first T-pylons, 8.5km of underground cables under the Mendip Hills Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty and two new substations at Sandford and Shurton.

This is a key role for us, as you will have overall responsibility for the management and delivery of consenting, development and construction activities of this strategically critical, high value complex project; ensuring delivery safely, to time, quality and within budget while maintaining or enhancing the reputation of National Grid in the Electricity Market.

Key Accountabilities will include:

  • Driving a safety culture to achieve and uphold the highest levels of Health & Safety.

  • Undertaking complex consenting for Nationally Significant Infrastructure Projects and gaining Parliamentary approval where required.

  • Developing, administering and managing intricate, multi-faceted budgets and investment plans while undertaking regular cost and productivity analysis to track and evaluate performance.

  • Provide coaching, guidance, direction, and leadership to the project team while ensuring resources meet budget and business plan objectives.

  • Implementing opportunities and managing risk to deliver all agreed outputs within the appropriate regulatory framework.

This is a South-West based role and requires travel to site as well as occasional travel to our Warwick headquarters. This can be combined with hybrid working from home.

What you'll need

  • Considerable breadth and depth of proven experience in construction project / programme and contract management.

  • Experience of working with Development Consent Orders (DCO’s) as well other consenting and planning of major infrastructure projects.

  • Significant experience working at a senior level within a construction business - executive experience leading large, complex programmes of work, enabling project teams to operate innovatively, effectively and efficiently.

  • Strong interpersonal and communication skills, capable of leading and influencing large, devolved teams, and gaining support and commitment from a wider operational group.

  • Customer management experience, with the ability to influence customers and partner organisations.

  • Relationship management experience, driving commercial value and performance through major contracts.

  • Experience of leading change and business improvement within a complex organisation/programme or project.

  • Managing complex commercial arrangements, including setting up, negotiating, and managing large contracts.
