National Grid Assurance Engineer - Civil in United Kingdom

About the role

National Grid Interconnectors (https://www.nationalgrid.com/national-grid-ventures/interconnectors-connecting-cleaner-future) is at the heart of UK’s transition to our net zero energy future. We operate a number of HVDC interconnectors that connect the UK’s energy system to some of our closest neighbours, allowing energy to be imported to and exported from the UK. As well as already owning a portfolio of HVDC Interconnectors, we’re working on developing new projects in order to ensure that we are able to meet the UK’s future demands for greener energy solutions.

The UJV Operations team are responsible for ensuring safe and efficient operational running of a portfolio of interconnectors including NSL, IFA1, IFA2 and Viking Link. As an Assurance Engineer - Civil, you'll have a critical role ensuring that our operational interconnectors maintain the highest level of operational performance as well as ensuring that all our new interconnectors are developed, designed, constructed and commissioned in accordance with our standards and specifications.

In this role you can enjoy our hybrid working from office and home. You'll be flexible to travelling to our Warwick office and UK Interconnector sites, with occasional European travel as required. We’re happy to discuss any additional flexibility in working patterns or requirements that you feel could help to make this job work for you!

Key accountabilities

  • Responsible for the design assurance of HVDC interconnector civil engineering and building services systems from project feasibility through to commissioning for new HVDC interconnectors.

  • Support the development of new interconnector projects with civils design expertise.

  • Be a key contact for technical civil engineering advice within National Grid Ventures.

  • Ensure that the highest level of standards are maintained in respect of Health, Safety and Environmental/Sustainability issues.

  • Identify new technologies, methods and processes for the delivery of civil engineering and building works to improve safety, quality and repeatability of civil engineering activities.

  • Responsible for the design assurance of consultants and contractors engineering proposals in accordance with recognised British and European standards for civil engineering works.

About you

  • Experience of the construction process (design, specification and construction) for new-build civil engineering and building works.

  • Experience of interface management of multiple parties to coordinate the design and construction process.

  • Experience of working within HVDC transmission, Energy or Utility sector.

  • Broad knowledge of the requirements for safe work under UK legislation, preferably with a national accepted safety qualification such as IOSH, NEBOSH.

  • Able to communicate issues associated within area of expertise in a clear and concise manner, both verbally and in writing.

  • Chartered Engineer or working towards Chartership.

  • Educated to Degree level (or equivalent) in a relevant Engineering discipline.
