This is a one-year temporary position.

Role

ICI Colombie-Britannique is looking for an experienced, multiplatform Provincial Affairs Reporter for a one-year temporary assignment. This role is located in Victoria, the capital of British Columbia and seat of the Legislative Assembly.

As Provincial Affairs Reporter, you will perform reporting and editorial assignments for radio, television, digital and social media that typically involve the gathering, writing and presentation (including talk-tapes and live hits) of information related to provincial affairs — specifically, but not exclusively, the legislature, public service, Crown corporations, members of civil society, voters, analysts and recognized experts as well as political parties and politicians.

You will report to the Vancouver newsroom and have access to editorial support, but you must have initiative, keen news sense and superior editorial judgment. Work can involve co-ordination of the activities of others, and close co-operation with the program unit is essential.

You will file for all editorial platforms as needed and attend assignment meetings.

Your work must abide by CBC/Radio-Canada journalistic and programming policies, standards and practices.

Key tasks:

  • Develop and maintain a network of provincial contacts as well as an array of recognized experts and authorities able to comment on issues and events that may arise from time to time. Ensure that your knowledge of provincial political history and the individuals involved is current.

  • Gather and research information on political or governmental issues and events; follow issues of significant interest as they develop over a period of time.

  • Because of your expertise, you may be assigned to cover stories and events of significance in the province. While these events may not initially be political in nature, they typically assume sufficient import that the government becomes involved.

  • Regularly check material gathered against other sources to ensure clarity and accuracy of content.

  • Regularly report on multiple platforms, describing these events and issues; provide in-depth background information and detailed analysis to foster better understanding among viewers/listeners.

  • Arrange and conduct interviews.

  • Work closely with program personnel to plan coverage of upcoming events for all platforms.

  • Working closely with production personnel, conceive of and produce innovative and informative material for all platforms that aids in the explanation of the issue being presented.

  • Write introductory and linking continuity for daily reports and news programs. Critically edit material written by others and/or items produced by others.

  • Provide leadership, advice and guidance to colleagues and co-workers; lead by example.

  • As assigned or required, perform any function or task of a Reporter/Editor.

  • You may occasionally be asked to cover local issues on Vancouver Island.

  • You will become a member of the B.C. Legislative Press Gallery.

Please note:

  • The work schedule will include weekend shifts on a rotating basis.

  • Excellent understanding of spoken and written English is required (English-speaking province). You must have solid command of spoken and written French (all reporting done in French).

We are looking for a candidate with the following:

  • University degree or equivalent

  • Three (3) years’ directly related experience that includes proven ability in the field

  • Ease with live reporting

  • Excellent reporting and interviewing skills across platforms

  • Bilingualism (English/French) required

  • Ability to work with a variety of teams but also be a strong self-starter

  • Critical mind

  • Proven ability to work in a high-stress, tight-deadline environment

  • Experience working on multiple stories simultaneously

  • Familiarity with CBC/Radio-Canada production tools an asset (Dalet, Scoop, iNews, MediaCentral and Hindenburg)

  • Knowledge of B.C. politics an asset

  • Political science background an asset

  • Understanding of the public broadcaster’s role and responsibilities

  • Knowledge of CBC/Radio-Canada’s Journalistic Standards and Practices

  • Valid driver’s licence and a driving record that meets the minimum requirements of CBC/Radio-Canada’s insurance company

Please provide a resumé in French, samples of reporting work relevant to the position, and a link to your online demo.

Candidates may be subject to skills and knowledge testing.

We thank all applicants for their interest, but only candidates selected for an interview will be contacted.
