THE ROLE:

CBC British Columbia Production Services is looking for an experienced Switcher/Director to be based in Vancouver. This role is full-time on-site in our Vancouver production facility.

As the Switcher/Director, you are a team leader in the control room. You are responsible for the switching and direction of CBC News live and packaged programs using Ross Overdrive or another software based automation system. Working collaboratively with editorial and production team members and your Switcher Director colleagues, you will be responsible for coding iNews lineups, switching, directing, mixing audio and video elements involved in the production through Ross Overdrive. Within this, there is latitude for creativity, initiative and independent judgement. During parts of your shift, you may also be required to act as assistant director to another Switcher Director, as Resources Producer for live show elements, operate remote and manually control cameras and edit video elements using non-linear editing software. You may also be asked to coordinate the work of others.

You could be required to work morning, evening, late-night, weekend or holiday shifts. The primary schedule will be Wednesday to Sunday. You will report directly to the Manager, Productions Services.

THE SPECIFICS:

You will work closely with your production teams to plan and execute daily show requirements and ensure that the work adheres to the CBC/Radio-Canada Journalistic Programming policies and standards.

You have a passion for directing and multitasking in a live environment. You are a team leader and collaborator. You are able to make a number of technical and editorial decisions to ensure consistency with our brand. You are a sociable person, who makes it easy to integrate into various teams. You have solid editorial judgement and actively participate in various production duties. You are creative and able to bring new ideas to the table. You are flexible and can easily adapt to changing situations. And you embrace and promote the values of diversity and an inclusive and respectful workplace.

Some of your tasks include:

  • Participates in the conception, planning and development of the program or segment being directed.

  • Providing on-air, participants and members of the production crew with clear direction throughout the program.

  • Organises and, if required, rehearses all elements of the program to ensure that the talent and crew are fully prepared.

  • Switches and mixes audio and video elements involved in the production through Ross Overdrive or other software based programs.

  • Ensuring the technical quality of all newscast components.

  • Responsible for daily follow ups and Continuous Improvement production reports.

  • Demonstrate leadership skills when participating in the planning, development and execution of programs.

  • Assist and collaborate with fellow Switcher Directors in various situations.

  • Provide feedback to your team to assist in their performance.

We are looking for a candidate with the following:

  • A combination of education and experience equivalent to a college diploma in production and post-production techniques, plus five (5) years of practical and relevant control room experience.

  • Sound knowledge of the Ross Overdrive video switching systems.

  • Two (2) or more years experience performing directing live news production duties.

  • Operation of live production audio consoles through automation and use of sound processing and equalisation tools

  • Ability to work well under pressure for extended periods with multiple people during live broadcasts.

  • Timing of live productions in an Assistant Director role.

  • Non-linear editing in an Avid or Adobe environment.

  • Operation of software based live production tools such as Vidigo, Vmix or OBS.

  • Leadership, editorial judgement and decision-making skills.

  • Self-motivated and self-directed. Shows initiative in continuously improving on-air productions.

  • Interpersonal and communication skills.

  • Ability to multitask and prioritize competing demands.

  • Strong technical and analytical skills with an emphasis on troubleshooting complex systems.

  • TV production experience in a news environment is essential.

  • Flexibility in scheduling is a requirement.
