Canadian Tire Physical Product Designer in Vancouver, British Columbia

What you'll do

The Physical Product Designer is a part of a highly motivated team of design professionals that share an appreciation and passion for outdoor adventure. You are inspired by innovative design and recognize that style, performance, and quality are all part and parcel to creating considered products. Through the direction from senior team members, collaboration with cross functional partners and research, the designer will create concepts and production ready design strategies that meet the needs of our customers. With the direction outlined in design Briefs the designer will initiate and interpret research to create new product concepts to meet the needs of our consumers. As a product designer, you will be creating products for all CTC outdoor recreation brand labels (Woods, Outbound, Huntshield, Yukon Gear, Helly Hansen); for categories such as Backpacks, Lighting, Tents, Sleeping Bags and Camp Accessories.You are equally comfortable developing fresh ideas as you are refining proven concepts. As a product designer, you will communicate product concepts through line sketches, photo renderings, technical specification packages. You use colour, patterns, textures and imagery to communicate the line’s core brand positioning. Highly detail oriented, you thrive in a fast-paced environment where design projects are delivered on time and on budget.

  • Accountable for creating products that are on-brand, ensures the design meets all requirements & targets as briefed by the product team through collaborative concept presentations, sample reviews with all stake holders and manufacturing partners.

  • Effectively execute seasonal product creation goals and deliverables, by managing the cadence of product development according to the product creation calendar.

  • Build productive relationships with our manufacturing partners, product teams and all other cross functional partners, through effective communication and appropriate onsite travel/visits to manufacturing partner’s facilities.

  • Ensure all new projects and current mainline products are engineered to meet and exceed cost targets and financial objectives. • Support the broader business team members to deliver project deliverables on time and on budget.

  • Ability to incorporate all the different insights from global marketplace trends, construction techniques, materials, fabric, color and category needs to deliver market ready product.

  • Attend selected trade shows for market research and attends sales meetings to gain thorough understanding of customer and product requirements.

  • Accurately assesses the overall competitive market landscape to design brand appropriate equipment that reflects an understanding of the target consumer.

What you bring

  • Proactive interest in the outdoors, related equipment and our customers. Experience in the Outdoor Sporting Goods industry is an important asset.

  • Accredited degree in Industrial Design or related field

  • A minimum of 3-5 years’ experience in a product design role

  • Strong expertise in Adobe C-Suite (Illustrator and Photoshop); additional 3D modeling experience highly desirable.

  • Strong knowledge of MS Office.

  • Knowledge of PLM (Product Line Management) tools.

  • Familiarity with common manufacturing techniques including cut-and-sew, screen printing, embroidery, injection and compression molding, high frequency welding, etc.

  • Team player who works closely with Sourcing, Product Management and Brand Marketing to develop innovative and commercial product ideas

  • A thorough understanding of the design, development and merchandising process from inception through production.

  • Proactive and passionate approach to driving fresh, innovative thinking from product concept to final execution.

  • The ability to keep ego in check, while collaborating with our dynamic cross-functional teams to achieve business goals.

  • Strong presentation/speaking skills – able to present and sell to all levels of the organization as well as the customer, communicating a clear and inspiring vision.

  • The ability to precisely communicate and negotiate time frames verbally and in writing in a multi-cultural environment.

  • Demonstrated collaboration, interpersonal influence, and teamwork skills (maintains effective communication and working relationships).

  • Results orientation while exhibiting great energy and resourcefulness.

  • Self-starter who brings passion, enthusiasm and focus to each project.

  • Exceptional project planning, organizational and time management skills and a high level of initiative and attention to detail.

  • Strong analytical skills and data-driven thinking.

  • Able to manage to deadlines, be flexible with change, drive to timely resolution.

  • Able to lift packages up to 25lbs

Beyond a competitive base salary of $70,000 to $90,000, you'll enjoy company benefits, bonuses, or any additional compensation.
