Port of Vancouver Environmental Coordinator – Infrastructure Projects in Vancouver, British Columbia

The Vancouver Fraser Port Authority is responsible for the stewardship of the Port of Vancouver, Canada’s largest and most diversified port. Our mandate as a Canada Port Authority, as set out by the Canada Marine Act, is to enable Canada’s trade objectives, ensuring goods are moved safely and responsibly through the Port of Vancouver. That means providing infrastructure and ensuring the safe and efficient movement of marine traffic and cargo within the port. It also means we carry out reviews of proposed activities and developments on federal port lands and waters to determine whether a project can go ahead without impacts to the environment and community that cannot be mitigated.

The Environmental Coordinator – Infrastructure Projects provides support for the planning and implementing of environmental programs relating to port authority led infrastructure projects. This includes environmental impact assessment, mitigation program planning and implementation, and monitoring. This position supports coordination and communications with internal port authority contacts, and external coordination with regulators, Indigenous groups and stakeholders regarding environmental programs for port authority infrastructure projects.

What you do:

  • Assist in the development ofdetailed environmental effect mitigation and monitoring work plans

  • Provide support in theadministration of environmental mitigation and program delivery, includingoverseeing specialist consultants to support the mitigation programs asrequired. Work with specialist consultant teams and contribute to theirwork as required. Monitor plan implementation and progress. Tabulate andpresent monitoring data and assist in the interpretation of itssignificance, with support from specialist consultants as appropriate

  • Provide port authorityrepresentation at meetings with environmental regulatory agencies,community, Indigenous groups and other stakeholders and, whereappropriate, assist in facilitating competing priorities to ensure portauthority interests are met

  • Provide support for port authorityinitiatives such as sustainability and environmental programs, and external engagement

  • Assist in field programs and site visits (asrequired)

  • Write briefing papers, businesscases, submissions, reports and presentations to support project planningand compliance

  • Coordinate the planning,execution, monitoring, reporting, and closing of various projects

  • Track open action items, issuesand risks and ensure timely resolution

  • Assist with the preparation ofproject cost estimates and progress reports. Prepare high level schedulesfor project delivery and resource management purposes

  • Assist in overseeing siteinvestigation, topographic surveys and other environmentalpre-construction and construction contracts

  • Coordinate and participate incommunication and consultation with project stakeholders, includingmunicipalities, road and rail authorities’ adjacent communities and FirstNations

  • Report on project status throughvarious internal project tracking systems. Participate in the preparationof monthly project status reports

  • Assist with the development andimplementation of guidelines and other documents to support work flowprocesses

  • Participate in health and safetyinitiatives and comply with established policy, procedures and guidelinesto protect yourself and your work colleagues. Report concerns, hazards,risks and incidents to management for follow-up

What you bring:

  • Must have aBachelor of Science degree in Biology, Geology, Geo-Environmental Sciences orEnvironmental Engineering or other acceptable university degree

  • Must have aminimum of 2 years of experience in environmental impact assessment,construction environmental monitoring, or other directly related experience inthe delivery of major infrastructure projects in complex multi-stakeholderenvironments

  • Must haveapplied experience in environmental aspects of project development,procurement, and contract administration

  • Must have astrong working knowledge of federal and provincial environmental legislationand permitting requirements

  • Must haveexcellent computer skills including the use of Microsoft office tools

  • Must be a teamplayer with excellent interpersonal and communication skills and the ability towork effectively and positively with all contacts, internally and externally

  • Must be able towork independently, accurately and on own initiative to maintain work outputwith minimum supervision

  • Must be ahighly organized and detailed-oriented individual who can manage competingpriorities and perform multiple tasks as required

Job type: Bargaining Unit, Full-Time, Permanent, Hybrid

Working environment: Normal office conditions with occasional exposure to adverse weather conditions on operating terminals, roadways and surrounding areas. Required to work off hours occasionally.
