  • Responsible for routine reporting, surveillance, and epidemiologic investigations to support the control of diseases of public health significance

  • Develops and implements policies and procedures to support surveillance functions related to diseases of public health significance and environmental health

  • Prepares communicable disease surveillance reports, including online real-time dashboards, that summarize appropriate epidemiological analysis and interpretation of data. Ensures use of appropriate computer and cloud-based applications and presents results in a useful, understandable format, including charts, graphs, maps, dashboards, infographics, and social media content, in collaboration with TPH Communications, etc.

  • Disseminates results of investigations, special studies and reports, routine surveillance and analyses of communicable disease surveillance, environmental health population health assessment data

  • Responds to requests for epidemiologic information from public health staff, other departments, external agencies, and the public

  • Manages assigned projects, ensuring effective teamwork and communication, high standards of work quality and organizational performance and continuous learning

  • Develops, communicates, and implements quality assurance methods and epidemiological standards for the collection, analysis and use of data as well as the preparation of reports based on this evidence

  • Coordinates the use of various surveillance sources to monitor activity related to diseases of public health significance and to detect outbreaks

  • Responds to requests and prepares reports for population health status information from public health staff, other City Divisions, external agencies and the public

  • Develops and maintains processes related to the access, storage, security, use, and reporting of health status data and datasets, ensuring that the terms of data licenses and/or data sharing agreements are adhered to

  • Supervises, motivates and trains assigned staff, ensuring effective teamwork, high standards of work quality and organizational performance, continuous learning and encourages innovation in others

  • Monitors and evaluates staff performance, approves salary increments, hears grievances and recommends disciplinary action when necessary

  • Provides input into and administers assigned budget, ensuring that expenditures are controlled and maintained within approved budget limitations

  • Provides consultation, training and support to program staff on current and past communicable disease activities, and the appropriate epidemiological, statistical, survey and evaluative methods to understand them

  • Contributes to strategic and operational planning for issues related to population health status and disease surveillance information. Works with program staff to identify public health issues, establish priorities and develop program plans and policy based on epidemiological evidence

Key Qualifications:

  1. Master’s Degree or higher in Epidemiology, or approved combination of education and extensive experience.

  2. Considerable experience working in a public health or related agency.

  3. Experience working with communicable diseases.

  4. Experience in staff leadership, supervising, directing and working effectively with staff and utilizing positive problem-solving solutions.

  5. Strong knowledge and skills in epidemiological and statistical methods and applied research.

  6. Previous experience with large databases such as CCHS, BORN, iPHIS (Integrated Public Health Information Systems) and CRN, is an asset.

  7. Excellent project management and organizational skills, with proven ability to meet tight deadlines and competing priorities.

  8. Ability to communicate effectively, to prepare written reports, and make oral presentations and to utilize current data visualization tools and techniques.

  9. Strong knowledge of current public health issues, epidemiological concepts, quality assurance principles, and data management concepts including issues related to privacy, data licenses, and data sharing agreements.
