The Senior Manager, Portfolio Oversight is a pivotal role within Scotiabank's GRM International Banking Retail Credit Risk team, based in Toronto, Canada. This position is at the forefront of portfolio management, ensuring alignment with our judicious vision and providing critical executive reporting and communication.

As a leader in portfolio oversight, the Senior Manager will champion a customer-focused culture, driving team efforts to deepen client relationships and leverage the broader bank's resources and knowledge. They will play an instrumental role across our International Business sites, assisting local retail risk and business strategies throughout the International Banking footprint, while following Scotiabank’s Risk Appetite and policy frameworks.

With a keen understanding of both traditional retail mass markets as well as consumer and microfinance segments, the Senior Manager will adeptly identify key success metrics, evaluate trends, and devise risk management recommendations. This role is essential in articulating portfolio performance, providing insights, and making recommendations that will shape the future of our international banking operations.

Job Responsibilities:

Country & Portfolio Oversight

  • Maintain Effective Monitoring and Reporting on country performance trends and results in relation to targets. Consider origination trends and portfolio issues by product, channel, segment, and specific programs as developed from time to time. Overlay the impact of any political, economic/ environmental, and social concerns affecting the business.

  • Socialize findings with stakeholders including future impacts to losses and proposed recommendations to Management; and prepare updates for Executive, Regional Management, and other IB stakeholders

  • Utilize local information, and MIS to gain understanding of results. Work with GRM partners to promptly identify emerging trends that can impact portfolio performance.

  • Provides month end and quarter end executive communication on portfolio trends, identifying and explaining any concerns or deviations.

  • Remain on top of changing economic or market conditions, legal and regulatory requirements, operating procedures and practices, management restructurings, and the impact of new technology.

Relationships & Communications

  • Foster and maintain collaborative relationships with key internal and external stakeholders including country managers in Toronto and senior leaders in the countries to assist executive communication, explanation of deviations, portfolio reviews and delivering quarter end and month end reports.

Governance & Best Practices

  • Ensure credit policies and procedures are created to balance risk and growth for retail portfolios through ongoing monitoring to key risk measures, and provide counsel on opportunities to expand business where appropriate.

  • Assist site in meeting local regulatory requirements from a credit and operational perspective. This would include the assessment and installation of effective controls over lending policies, centralized processes for fulfillment of credit, and collections management.

  • Formalize local originations, accounts management and collections policies and its compliance with established Global Risk Policies and make recommendations.

  • Deliver continuous benchmark of best practices across the region, of current local policies aiming to find opportunities to standardize the credit approach across the region in order to drive benefits and close gaps accordingly.

  • Lead the side-by-side analysis to compare strategies among sites and provide insight and recommendations to set the divisional standard for credit practices.

  • Understand how the Bank’s risk appetite and risk culture should be considered in day-to-day activities and decisions.

Job Requirements:

  • Exceptional communication skills and ability to summarize and present insights in succinct and logical manner

  • Minimum 5 years of experience in risk/portfolio management area with a successful track record of success in leading and implementing change in the financial services sector.

  • Knowledge of customer segmentation, credit scoring models, including behavioural, custom and credit bureau scores, marketing models (attrition/retention) and their respective validation process

  • Project management skills to prioritize and balance different priorities at the same time, with a successful track record of success in leading and implementing change in banking initiatives

  • Strong leadership/innovative and motivational skills are required in order to influence change.

  • Exposure to the projection of delinquency rates, loan loss provisions and recoveries

  • Strong financial analysis and written skills complemented with solid deductive reasoning, sound judgement and creativity

  • Strong negotiating and networking skills in conducting day to day activities

  • Fluency in Spanish an asset (not mandatory)

  • Graduate degree in Finance, Economics, Business or related field an asset
