The opportunity

Reporting to the Senior Director/AVP, Philanthropy, the Senior Manager, Foundations is responsible for developing, implementing, and overseeing the organization’s national strategy for approaching foundations and granting agencies to grow investments in March of Dimes Canada’s (MODC) new journey to be the leader in unlocking the potential of children, youth, and adults with disabilities.

This role will manage and oversee MODC’s grant application process, including identification of potential new funding sources, identifying, cultivating relationships and approaching foundations for funding support. The role includes researching prospects, relationship building with current and new prospects, cultivation, and proposal writing and reporting.

RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Create and oversee a national strategy to grow and develop the grants and foundations portfolio.

  • Oversee research and identification of foundations and government grant opportunities that align with MODC’s philanthropy objectives.

  • Lead research, development, and writing of collateral materials, including letters of intent, funding proposals, grant applications, and cases for support.

  • Collaborate with the Board of Directors and Executive Leadership Team to develop work plans and budgets.

  • Manage a pipeline of approximately 150+ donors and new prospects ($5K+ level) for cultivation, solicitation, recognition, and stewardship.

  • Personally solicit donations and pledges in the $10K-$100K range.

  • Support revenue targets and ensure consistent, compelling, and on-brand communications.

  • Assist senior leadership and campaign volunteers in identifying, cultivating, and soliciting major gifts ($100K+).

  • Build and manage strong relationships with funders and MODC program staff.

  • Support campaign volunteers, the President & CEO, and senior staff with proposals, stewardship reports, and donor meetings.

  • Ensure research and program impact data, including statistics, citations, stories, and client testimonials, are up to date and accurate.

  • Develop a system to monitor grant administration, timelines, deliverables, reporting, and recognition.

  • Maintain accurate records in the donor management system for gifts, pledges, and appreciation efforts.

  • Support and oversee foundation fundraising budgets and achieve fundraising targets.

  • Collaborate with other fundraising disciplines and teams at MODC to contribute to overall fundraising targets and initiatives.

  • Stay current with industry practices and trends in foundation giving, stewardship, and donor engagement.

  • Act as a subject matter expert and drive collaboration to identify future opportunities.

  • Provide regular updates to the Senior Director/AVP, Philanthropy on the status of grant applications.

QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Post-secondary diploma or degree in Fundraising, Communications, Marketing, or a related field.

  • Minimum seven years of progressive experience in fundraising, including proposal writing and securing grants.

  • Proven success in identifying and securing new philanthropic partnerships with foundations and grantors ($5K+ level).

  • Certified Fundraising Executive (CFRE) designation or equivalent is an asset.

  • Bilingual in French is considered an asset.

  • Experience managing relationships with senior volunteers and major foundation donors.

  • Experience in donor stewardship research and donor stewardship.

  • Experience managing budgets and financial reporting.

  • Superior writing skills with the ability to adapt the style for specific funders.

  • Strong ability to articulate KPIs and outcomes based on funder needs.

  • Excellent editing and proofreading skills with high attention to detail.

  • Strong project management, organizational, analytical, and administrative skills.

  • Self-motivated to achieve results and an effective team player.

  • Proven ability to meet goals within restricted timeframes.

  • Ability to work with sensitive, confidential information in a fast-paced environment.

  • Proficient in MS Office Suite with strong experience in donor management databases.
