What You’ll Be Doing

As Senior Counsel, Wealth Management at CIBC, you will be accountable for providing legal services and advice in relation to our asset management business. Using strong independent judgment, broad-based legal knowledge, and a high level of professionalism, you'll proactively work with our lines of business and functional areas, to execute on the business priorities of the asset management business including the preparation of client facing materials and reviewing and advising on regulatory developments and requirements while mitigating potential legal risks. You will be involved in a wide range of asset management legal matters, with a focus on supporting the CIBC institutional asset management business, including advising on the launch and distribution of private pooled and alternative funds, reviewing and drafting commercial agreements and providing regulatory advice in relation to investment funds and portfolio management.

You will report to the Managing Counsel, Wealth Management, and will provide excellent quality legal advice. You should be able to demonstrate strong drafting skills and advocacy capabilities, develop a point of view on emerging issues and trends impacting asset management and possess strong team oriented leadership and organizational skills.

How You’ll Succeed

  • Legal Advice – Providing business-focused legal advice in a dynamic role that includes advice on securities laws and a broad range of emerging regulatory matters of increasing strategic and reputational significance for CIBC and its subsidiaries.

  • Leadership – Take a leadership role in the negotiation of strategic projects and initiatives by providing proactive legal advice, identifying potential legal and reputational risks, and developing and proposing risk mitigation strategies. Keep apprised of legal developments and applicable legislation and case law, and take a lead role in, or oversee, the identification and assessment of any impact such developments may have on CIBC.

  • Judgment & Collaboration – Work in close collaboration with colleagues in the Legal Department, as appropriate, to execute complex and time-sensitive projects. You’ll utilize strong independent judgment, broad-based legal knowledge, and a high level of professionalism in working with teams across CIBC, including our executive and senior leadership. You’ll create and foster partnerships and relationships across CIBC by facilitating open communication, and by anticipating client, business and shareholder needs. When required, you’ll oversee and manage the relationship with outside counsel.

  • Business Mindset – Review, draft, and negotiate complex and sensitive legal documents. Use strong judgment and know when to escalate material legal and/or reputational issues in a timely manner. As an employee of CIBC, comply with all applicable CIBC policies, standards, guidelines and control requirements.

  • Relationship Building – Participate, as a team member, in various projects relating to product and service development by providing legal and regulatory advice, identifying potential legal risks, and assisting with the development of risk mitigation strategies. Develop and sustain good working relationships with designated lines of business by facilitating open communication and becoming familiar with the designated lines of business.

Who You Are

  • You’re a certified professional. The successful candidate must have been called to the Bar in Ontario.

  • You can demonstrate a minimum of 5 years of related experience including experience gained at a top tier law firm or a major corporation. Experience providing legal support to asset management firms or pension funds would be considered an asset.
