As a member of the Acquisitions team, your role as Senior Advisor, Acquisitions (Unscripted) is to serve CBC’s mandate to inspire, educate and entertain Canadians by contributing to programming excellence. You are committed to championing stories from underrepresented communities and creators, knowing that a driving objective for CBC is to reflect Canada across all platforms. Reporting to the Senior Director, Acquisitions, the Senior Advisor, Acquisitions (Unscripted) is responsible for sourcing and evaluating a variety of content, making program planning recommendations, executing departmental requirements, and overseeing the integration of acquired content across departments internally.
Responsibilities include:
Daily and ongoing research/assessment/evaluation of Unscripted content (documentary, lifestyle and factual) one-offs, specials and series, towards content planning recommendations to the Senior Director for CBC Gem, CBC Main Network, including The Passionate Eye strand and documentary Channel.
Daily and on-going research/assessment of distributor catalogues to identify potential programming opportunities; refining pool of available content best fitting CBC’s current programming needs with particular focus on CBC Gem Thematic Collections.
Responsible for building and managing relationships with the Unscripted division and documentary channel teams. Specific responsibility for identifying and communicating potential promotional requirements/restrictions outlined in license agreements
Managing documentary Channel-CBC Gem Program Share Agreement; leading content selection process and acting as intermediary to initiate and conclude paperwork with the documentary channel and Business & Rights team
Managing internal requests for acquisitions investment/contribution for CBC content such as Absolutely Canadian and Arts programming
Managing evaluation process for potential and current Gem partnerships; ensuring partnership titles are carried through to successful launch, such as AMI, NFB and others
Creation and maintenance of internal tracking documents; regular and consistent digital recordkeeping, including managing and monitoring content evaluation records and programming/scheduling requirements
Leading initial conversations and information gathering with outside stakeholders towards licensing offers; Creation of Request to Acquire document and liaising with Business and Rights department throughout deal negotiations
Building new connections with BIPOC content creators; leading sourcing of programming for Black History Month collection, National Indigenous History Month collection, Pride Collection and other similar offerings
Initiating and maintaining close ties with key global content suppliers; holding face-to-face meetings with content suppliers to discuss CBC’s current programming needs and review potential content for acquisition consideration
Attending industry conferences and festivals as a delegate of CBC’s Acquisitions department, as required .
Maintain up-to-date knowledge of relevant competing services- both streaming and broadcast; a keen understanding of the Canadian and International Unscripted Content players including distributors/festivals/producers/filmmakers, as well as broader issues in culture, broadcasting/streaming, current affairs, documentary and Unscripted trends in media
We are looking for a candidate with the following:
University Degree in a relevant field or equivalent experience.
Minimum 6 years experience in an environment with direct exposure to television and/or film content production, sales & distribution, festival programming or broadcast/streaming, with specific knowledge of Unscripted Content
Experience in content evaluation within a market-driven framework for programming purposes- ie: broadcast, streamers and or film/tv festivals
Deep exposure to Unscripted/Factual/Documentary/Lifestyle content; possessing strong content evaluation abilities and a drive to source content reflecting underrepresented group
Strong cultural sensitivity and a commitment to contributing to an inclusive and equitable culture
Deep understanding of Acquisitions framework including processes, requirements, systems and stakeholders
Solid understanding and familiarity with Content Delivery procedures including broadcast material requirements (Closed Captioning and Described Video), marketing asset formats
Solid understanding of legal framework and rights language related to content acquisitions contracts; clear understanding of complexity of rights within a broader market context as well as related to content use strategies
Strong knowledge of global content market; relationships with Canadian/International Content Suppliers/Distributors is required
Ability to multitask and handle complex, competing priorities; works effectively in decision making regarding conflicting priorities
Must understand complexity of business practices and parameters.
Ability to exercise judgment and work independently, taking initiative as required
Ability to function collaboratively and effectively across several departments in a multi-functional capacity
Strong & professional communication skills both written and verbal
Must foster strong working relationships
