CBC News Network is seeking a producer assigned as a Story Editor to help the Weekend teams drive live and breaking coverage of domestic and international stories.

You’re an editorial leader who plans, conceives, organizes, and develops Live chase segments. This includes supervising and assigning associate producers, planning and shaping the stories that result from those chases, and the production of greens and lineup elements. You also help organize and plan for News Specials on CBC News Network.

You’re a strong team player, working closely with the Executive Producer, Senior Producer, and Host of the program to bring guests with a wide range of expertise, backgrounds and life experiences to the audience. You help to ensure all of the content adheres to CBC Journalistic Standards and Practices.

We are also looking for someone who will help train and mentor less experienced journalists in the newsroom.

You care about the people you work with and have a deep appreciation for different perspectives, opinions and experiences. You live and promote the values of diversity and an inclusive and respectful work culture.

Based in Toronto, this is a permanent, part-time role, scheduled on Saturday and Sunday including evenings. This producer may also be expected to work other hours or overtime when required to cover operational needs in the newsroom, including early mornings and/or weekends.

Key Tasks

  • Pitch story and segment ideas and treatments for CBC News Network Weekends.

  • Assign, organize and supervise other producers or associate producers chasing guest interview segments.

  • Understand the importance of broadening our perspectives in our storytelling, and making an intentional effort to diversify the range of interviewees in our programming.

  • Vet content before air with attention to focus, question lines, graphics and visuals, and other production elements.

  • Co-ordinate a chase plan each day in concert with the senior producer.

  • Exercise editorial responsibility as assigned.

  • Mentor junior members of the team and help them navigate the newsroom and support them through times of change.

  • Ensure content adheres to CBC Journalistic Standards and Practices.

We are looking for a candidate with the following:

  • Job requires five years experience of which three must involve work in broadcasting or a closely related industry, which is directly related to the area of assignment.

  • Solid journalistic skills, with highly developed vetting skills.

  • Highly developed analytical skills and the ability to make complex stories and issues easily understood.

  • Highly developed production skills, including strong ability to produce for a variety of program formats.

  • Experience using production tools such as DTV, VIzrt, iNews automated lineups, and Media Central.

  • Strong community connections, particularly with equity-deserving groups, and have maintained a comprehensive database of guests covering a wide-ranging of topics.

  • A track record of completing assignments independently.

  • Leadership potential. We are looking for somebody who desires, and has the ability to take on more responsibility and leadership roles in the future.

  • Ability to mentor junior members of the team and the newsroom.

  • Ability to communicate effectively and co-operatively.

  • Self-motivated, with highly developed interpersonal skills.
