Director, Pooled Investment Vehicles

Location: Global

Purpose

Responsible for providing timely investment advice and value-added pooled investment vehicles (e.g. mutual funds, ETFs, alternative investments, etc) recommendations to relationships managers across key Global Wealth Management distribution channels.

Contributes to the overall success of the Product Services Group, which manages global risk ratings and the product shelf, to ensure key initiatives are executed in support of the team’s business strategies and objectives. Ensures all activities conducted to comply with governing regulations, internal policies, and procedures.

Accountabilities

  • Champions a customer-focused culture to deepen client relationships and leverage broader Bank relationships, systems, and knowledge.

  • Lead the design and implementation of a Global Wealth Management framework for pooled investment vehicles. Partner with internal distribution and asset management teams to align asset allocation, portfolio strategy, and product fulfillment options with a pan-wealth perspective.

  • Responsible for the effective functioning of the Investment Funds team through due diligence on pooled investment vehicles, including:

  • Conduct primary research (quantitative and qualitative) and due diligence of alternative funds, offshore funds, and ETFs.

  • Support management of mutual funds, offshore funds, and ETF recommended lists and guided portfolios to ensure positions continue to meet GPAG’s selection criteria

  • Provide advisory support by providing recommendations, conducting client portfolio reviews for existing clients, and portfolio proposals to attract new business.

  • Understand how Scotiabank’s risk appetite and risk culture are implemented in day-to-day activities and monitor investment options with a focus on product risk to anticipate any areas of concern.

  • Review third-party research pertaining to regulatory developments and assess the implications for Global Wealth and investment advisors

  • Communicate changes to advisor channel, Sales Management, Compliance, and other business lines

  • Perform due diligence on New/Complex/Exempt Products

  • Perform due diligence and analysis on exempt products (hedge funds, private assets, other Offering Memorandum products)

  • Review new product categories and due diligence on new issuers of approved product categories

  • Prepare internal due diligence reports and seek approval for new exempt products to the appropriate committees within Global Wealth Management

  • Monitor exempt offerings to ensure products and managers continue to meet qualification standards.

  • Maintain an internal database of approved Exempt Products and alternative Mutual Funds

  • Support the management of the alternative asset recommended list by monitoring the universe of alternative products approved by Scotia Wealth, and preparing written rationales for updates/changes to alternatives lists

  • Provide support to investment advisors through assessments of alternative products from an operational due diligence and product/investment strategy perspective.

  • Perform quarterly operational due diligence for exempt offerings on the PIC platform and prepare and present oversight results to the appropriate committee within Scotia Wealth

Dimensions

  • All wealth distribution channels within GWM (Canada, Mexico, Chile, Peru, Columbia, Jamaica, CCA)

  • Knowledge of pooled investment vehicles in key markets

  • Supports >1,000 relationship managers and >$200B in assets across GWM with PIV research

Education / Experience / Other Information

  • Minimum 10 years of finance-related experience

  • An understanding of Investment Funds/Alternative Assets/ETFs with five years of fund research/manager research experience

  • Post-secondary degree required (Commerce or Business Administration degree preferred)

  • CFA charter holder or candidate for the designation preferred

  • Strong skills in: analytics; written and verbal communication; relationship building; self-management; and attention to detail

  • Professional integrity

Working Conditions

  • Work takes place in an open concept office environment

  • Customer demands are constant and unpredictable. Non-standard working hours are a common occurrence

  • Deadlines to produce deliverables that reflect a high standard of personal and departmental professionalism may be unpredictable and conflicting

  • Exceptional time-management is a prerequisite skill for this position

Pursuant to a language needs assessment conducted by Scotiabank, the successful candidate will be required to be able to communicate in English in addition to French because they will be required to work closely with other groups from head office who operate primarily in English, they will report to a manager from head office who is an English speaker, and/or they will serve and English-speaking clientele.
