What you'll be doing.

The Director, Employee Relations is responsible for leading and managing the Employee Relations function within an assigned region/ function, ensuring business strategies, plans and initiatives are executed / delivered in compliance with governing regulations, internal policies and procedure. This role is responsible for leading a team that provides employee relations advice and counsel to executives, people managers and employees on complex workplace situations, providing a fair and transparent employee experience while managing risk to the Bank by ensuring compliance with Scotiabank’s Code of Conduct, policies, regulatory requirements and applicable laws. The Director will work closely with senior leadership, HR teams, and legal counsel to ensure a fair and consistent approach to employee relations across the Bank.

The Director, Employee & Labour Relations also oversees the Global Labour Relations strategy, and ensures it is aligned with Scotiabank’s overall goals. It is also responsible for overseeing labour relations programs, policies and procedures within Scotiabank to foster a positive labour relations environment.

Is this role right for you? In this role you will:

  • Leads and drives a customer focused culture throughout their team to deepen client relationships and leverage broader Bank relationships, systems and knowledge.

  • Develops and implements ER strategies, initiatives, policies, and programs that align with the Bank’s strategic priorities, goals and legal requirements.

  • Oversees the ER team’s management and resolution of workplace issues and incidents including investigations of employee concerns and escalations. Collaborate with HR Business Partners, people leaders and other stakeholders to proactively address and resolve workplace issues.

  • Leads and is accountable for ER case management practices, instilling trust in data reporting and trend analysis for insights delivery to Global HR, compliance, business leaders, designed to inform, influence policy, proactive program development and risk mitigation. Analyze ER trends and metrics to inform decision-making and improve ER practices.

  • Manages high-risk complex cases and act as a point of escalation on complex matters arising in their region/ function, ensuring that all necessary groups are engaged to resolve these cases satisfactorily.

  • Develops tools, guidance and resources to facilitate Employee Relations’ ability to support consistent advice at scale using best practices, while adhering to country specific legislation.

  • Supports the VP, Global Employee & Labour Relations on complex and sensitive matters and broader business-related initiatives.

  • Creates and maintains a proper framework that will ensure that issues are addressed proactively and managed at the local level to mitigate the potential negative impact of employee relations issues while furthering proactive efforts to create alignment, consistency, and accountability in risk management of the function.

  • Develops and implements the Labour Relations strategy in line with the Bank’s goals. Provides guidance on labour relations issues, anticipates trends, and proactively addresses challenges.

  • Collaborates with business and HR/LR leaders to govern and review collective bargaining agreements and address labour issues as well as to consider labour risk and impact of initiatives in unionized countries.

  • Understand how the Bank’s risk appetite and risk culture should be considered in day-to-day activities and decisions.

  • Creates an environment in which their team pursues effective and efficient operations of their respective areas in accordance with Scotiabank’s Values, its Code of Conduct and the Global Sales Principles, while ensuring the adequacy, adherence to and effectiveness of day-to-day business controls to meet obligations with respect to operational, compliance, AML/ATF/sanctions and conduct risk.

  • Builds a high performance environment and implements a people strategy that attracts, retains, develops and motivates their team by fostering an inclusive work environment and using a coaching mindset and behaviours; communicating vison/values/business strategy; and, managing succession and development planning for the team.

Do you have the skills that will enable you to succeed? We'd love to work with you if you have:

  • University degree; JD and Employment Law experience an asset

  • 10+ years of experience in Employee Relations, Labour Relations or Human Resources

  • Expert knowledge of employee relations

  • Knowledge of negotiation and conciliation/mediation

  • Expert workplace investigation investigation skills

  • Expert conflict/alternative dispute resolution skills

  • Expert concept knowledge of government policies/legislation

  • Strong problem-solving skills with ability to apply sound judgement

  • Strong People leadership skills

  • Strong communication and business writing skills

  • Experience managing and working with teams across locations and geographies

  • Ability to multitask while remaining organized; able to set priorities and meet deadlines

  • Initiate and influence vendor relationships to maximize value of services

  • Language: English, Spanish and/or French is an asset
