What you'll be doing

As a member of CIBC’s Big Data Platform Services (BDPS) Team, the Director, Application Development and Production Support is a seasoned leader responsible for providing direct application delivery services and production support, undertaking new initiatives and base essential support applications in the Big Data space. The role applies leadership skills and technical expertise to direct, manage and support large big data Azure applications on a day to day basis, leading internal change initiatives in alignment with ongoing technological changes. The Director, Application Development manages relationships with internal partners, maintaining continuous business communications with them to proactively assess any disruption in application functioning. In addition, the role leads the ongoing operations of applications and infrastructure in production, adhering to operational standards, vendor governance and business requirements. The role drives innovation across areas of responsibility, applying expert interpersonal, communications, and problem-solving skills.

How you'll succeed

  • Delivery Focused: Work closely with internal partners to determine, negotiate and manage projects to the agreed upon timeline. Monitor finances identify opportunities for improvement and recommend appropriate solutions. Under your leadership implement projects in a timely fashion that are of high quality, low cost and on budget.

  • Technical Expertise: Work closely (hands on) with the development, design and production support team to build strong and reliable data solutions, adhering and leveraging the best data practices.

  • Strong Leadership : Be a bold and authentic leader who is passionate about developing and coaching to bring out the best in people. Set appropriate context when assigning work to ensure that individuals’ roles support the achievement of the business unit’s priorities and CIBC’s overall goals. Manage performance by providing fair and accurate formal and informal feedback, identifying and removing obstacles to performance and by explaining how performance expectations align with business priorities.   • People Leadership : Lead and coach a high performing team of individuals to ensure multiple concurrent projects, objectives, and achievements are met.   • Relationship Management : Work closely with project teams, executives, stakeholders and business partners to develop, and implement application programs. Impact and improve the business by advising application owners on the technology implementation possibilities and requirements.

  • Moderate the Solution Creation Process: Lead, facilitate and coordinate the solution design, including ensuring alignment across multiple workstreams.

  • Finance Management : Ability to manage the resource finances to ensure all projects are on track for project timelines, and budget. Contribute to operational, short-term, and strategic planning in support of the Big Data Platform & Service team.

Who you are

  • You are a seasoned technical leader. You have 10 years of demonstrated experience in: technical architecture, solutions design, data engineering and production support in a big data environment

  • You can demonstrate experience in: 8+ years of forming, building and managing effective teams in a matrix fulltime/onshore/offshore model. Extensive experience managing complex IT projects from a task management perspective and are well versed in decision making processes. You should also have previous experience with:

  • Designing and building scalable frameworks and knowledge of Data Cloud Services in Azure such as Azure Data Factory, Databricks, Azure Data Lake Storage, Azure Blob, SQL Server, Function Apps, Azure Key Vaults, Azure Networking (VNETs & Private Endpoints), Event Hub, Cosmos DB, Azure Synapse and Databricks.

  • Hands on working experience with Big Data technologies such as Hadoop (Hive, HBase, Oozie, HiveQL, Hive UDFs, Sqoop, Spark, Impala).

  • Hands-on development expertise with Java, Scala, Python, SQL, C#

  • Container based systems such as OpenShift/Kubernetes & Docker.

  • Good knowledge of Github, Azure Monitor, Azure Purview, Unity Catalogue.

  • It’s an asset if you have a strong understanding of Data Mesh principles, distributed data systems, and microservices architecture.

  • It's an asset if you have fulfilled leadership and advisory roles for major functions and/or initiatives with the responsibility, authority and discretion for decision-making. You also have a technical background, sufficient depth and breadth to be able to recognize and successfully exploit opportunities for effective development or usage of IT, and lead/guide fully experienced technical specialists.

  • You have highly developed analytical and conceptual skills. You are adept at developing efficient and effective solutions to diverse and complex problems.
