POSITION OVERVIEW:

Globe Content Studio works with the country’s top brands to tell award-winning stories that resonate with their target audiences. From podcasts to video, photo essays to immersive interactives, on- and off-platform, it aims to exceed client objectives.

Joining the content-marketing division of The Globe and Mail requires a passion for excellence and an unwavering commitment to innovating in a fast-paced, dynamically evolving industry. The team of content strategists, creatives and analysts are seeking a creative lead who is a self-starter, and who is able to thrive in an entrepreneurial environment.

We are seeking a Creative Lead who will play an integral role in the look and feel of work produced by Globe Content Studio, including campaign oversight, supporting internal and client-facing storytelling objectives, and championing strategic design across multiple platforms. You will help bring big ideas to life with a multidisciplinary team to pitch and produce projects for The Globe and Mail and its advertising partners. The ideal candidate will have digital skills and familiarity with relevant platforms. The ability to provide direction on video and motion-graphic work will also be an asset. This is a 13-month contract position.

RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Taking charge of design and creative strategy, ensuring a bold, consistent look across channels, and spearheading the development of major initiatives for key clients. Collaborate closely with the content strategist to align creative vision with content goals. This is the beating heart of the job.

  • Facilitate brainstorming/creative sessions to generate fresh ideas. Produce unique creative solutions that meets client needs as well as our own.

  • Contribute to conversations around the best content formats to recommend when telling specific stories. Have a good grasp of how to bring interactive formats and pages to life on and off platform.Leverage data and insights to make informed content format recommendations to clients. Work with content strategists to identify and bring to life the best interactive formats and pages, both on and off-platform.

  • Collaborate with content strategists to integrate disparate pitch components (insights/content/KPIs/performance) into strong, cohesive creative narratives. Ensure seamless integration with other departments.

  • Art direction for large campaigns—setting out the creative concept and establishing a visual approach across touchpoints. Provide examples, case studies, mockups and mood boards where appropriate.

  • Lead the art direction for photography and video shoots where possible. Ensure visual elements align with the overall content strategy developed with the content strategist.

  • Build custom decks where appropriate and do same for Content Studio trade-marketing presentations.

  • Management of the creative production budget; establishing and maintaining external partnerships. Take lead on all video- and motion-related executions, hiring required external talent as needed.

  • Build, maintain and provide direction to a network of freelance talent, such as photographers, illustrators, designers, videographers, sound editors, and more.

  • Maintain and upgrade the Globe Content Studio website. Build, evolve and ‘own’ a distinctive visual identity for the Studio, helping create a world-class aesthetic through design and typography.

  • Providing creative direction to internal and external creative collaborators; an ability to give instructive feedback is key.

  • Ability to code with HTML and CSS. Partner with the interactive designer to produce standout editorial and Sponsor Content work.

  • Work with The Globe and Mail’s UX and newsroom teams to ensure adherence to Globe design principles.

  • Lead the team in understanding and explaining the capabilities of The Globe’s internal CMS and be able to adapt to third-party content-management systems.

  • Contribute to the annual Tactics & Takeaways signature Content Studio event by overseeing look and feel of all marketing assets. Be comfortable participating in events and workshops related to design and creativity. Help build post-event content assets.

QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Five or more years of experience in designing for digital media.

  • Bachelor’s degree, diploma or certification in design, communication, media, or relevant education program

  • Comprehensive knowledge of design software such as Figma, Photoshop, Illustrator, InDesign.

  • A background working in video editing and motion graphics is an asset.

  • Experience with HTML and CSS.

  • A background in content is an asset.

  • A self-starter who takes ownership of multiple project-based tasks; a proactive, innovative and accountable problem solver.

  • Team player suited to fast-paced, results-based environment, requiring flexibility to adapt to evolving market needs.

  • Ability to confidently communicate and defend design and creative choices to different stakeholders.
