CBC News Network is looking for an on-air Breaking News Host to help drive breaking news coverage on a range of national and international stories for CBC Newsroom (on-air Monday-Friday 10 am-3 pm ET).

When news breaks in an instant, anywhere in the world, at any time of day, Canadians tune to CBC News Network. The biggest news events in recent years saw CBC NN ratings surge to new heights, eclipsing competing all-news channels.

This is a key on-air journalistic role that requires excellent presentation skills. You must be able to gather and report developments with speed, accuracy, and in context, often while on air for extended periods of time.

As a breaking news host, you’re expected to own breaking news coverage in a comprehensive and meaningful way that extends beyond traditional news hitting.

You have a proven ability to work off-script and carefully navigate breaking news, separating rumour and speculation from fact and confirmed information. Your work is governed by and follows CBC journalistic and programming policies, standards and practices.

You work closely with the program producers and writers to craft coverage together. Leadership ability is an asset, working under pressure gracefully on a team.

You care about the people you work with and have a deep appreciation for different perspectives, opinions and experiences. You live and promote the values of diversity along with an inclusive and respectful work culture.

This contract full-time position is based in Toronto.

  • Research, gather, and confirm information from various sources ranging from witnesses and social media to institutions and agencies.

  • Conduct interviews.

  • Perform off script and be comfortable ad-libbing the latest details seamlessly into reporting, especially where information is sometimes scant or changing frequently.

  • Develop strong on-air rapport with program hosts, other journalists.

  • Demonstrate effective and creative story-telling treatments and presentation.

  • Pitch relevant story ideas and treatment.

  • Work with producers and writers on intros, question lines and visual selection.

  • Backfill host, as required.

  • Availability to work a variety of shift times and overtime including weekends, as required.

Relevant qualifications:

  • Minimum eight years of comparable and relevant experience in journalism, reporting Canadian and international news.

  • Experience in reporting live and breaking news. Demonstrated ability to work effectively in a high-pressure, tight-deadline environment.

  • Hosting experience is an asset.

  • Superior knowledge of broadcast journalism, and related skills including writing, interviewing and reporting live to camera.

  • Experience and ability navigating social media platforms such as Twitter, Facebook, YouTube and agencies like Storyful. Knowledge of fair dealing.

  • Thorough understanding of national and international news stories and issues.

  • Knowledge and ability to report on a range of topics including health, politics, business, science, technology, pop culture and entertainment.

  • Superb analytical skills, critical thinking, and the ability to make complex stories and issues easily understood.

  • Knowledge of CBC editorial policies, including CBC's Journalistic Standards and Practices.

  • Knowledge of an additional language (or more) is an asset.

  • Proficiency in learning and adapting to technology, such as touch screens and newsroom computer systems like iNews.

  • University degree or equivalent newsroom experience.

Candidates may be subject to skills and knowledge testing.
