THE ROLE:

CBC News Production Services is looking for an experienced Switcher/Director for CBC News Services.

As the Switcher/Director, you are a team leader in the control room. You are responsible for taking newscasts to air using the Ross Overdrive automation system. Working collaboratively with editorial and production team members and your Switcher Director colleagues, you will be responsible for coding iNews lineups, switching, directing, mixing audio and video elements involved in the production through Ross Overdrive.

You will report directly to the Manager of News Production Services. You may be assigned to CBC News Network, regional newscasts from Toronto’s centralized control rooms, The National, CBC News Explore and/or other CBC/Radio-Canada News programs. You will be required to work morning, evening, late-night, weekend and holiday shifts.

THE SPECIFICS:

You will work closely with your production teams to plan and execute daily show requirements and ensure that the work adheres to the CBC/Radio-Canada Journalistic Programming policies and standards.

You have a passion for directing and multitasking in a live environment. You are a team leader and collaborator. You are able to make a number of technical and editorial decisions to ensure consistency with our brand. You are a sociable person, who makes it easy to integrate into various teams. You have solid editorial judgment and actively participate in various production duties. You are creative and able to bring new ideas to the table. You are flexible and can easily adapt to changing situations. And you embrace and promote the values of diversity and an inclusive and respectful workplace.

Some of your tasks include:

  • Providing anchors, participants and members of the production crew with clear direction throughout the program.

  • Consulting with other specialists involved in the program to ensure creative and technical quality throughout the production.

  • Live switching video sources and mixing audio and video elements, such as graphics, involved in the production through Ross Overdrive.

  • Ensuring the technical quality of all newscast components.

  • Responsible for daily follow ups and production reports.

  • Demonstrate leadership skills when participating in the planning, development and execution of programs.

  • Assist and collaborate with fellow Switcher Directors in various situations.

  • Provide feedback to your team to assist in their performance.

We are looking for a candidate with the following:

  • A combination of education and experience equivalent to a college diploma in production and post-production techniques, plus five (5) years of practical and relevant control room experience.

  • Sound knowledge of the Ross Overdrive video switching systems.

  • Two (2) or more years experience performing technical production and/or directing duties.

  • Ability to work well under pressure for extended periods with multiple people during live broadcasts.

  • Editorial judgment, leadership and decision-making skills.

  • Self-motivated and self-directed.

  • Interpersonal and communication skills.

  • TV production experience in a news environment is essential.

  • Ability to multitask.

  • Strong technical skills and troubleshooting ability.

  • Flexibility in scheduling is a requirement.
