This is a hybrid role with a mix of in-office and remote work. Work arrangements will be discussed with hiring managers per departmental guidelines.

CBC Digital Strategy and Products is looking for an Android Senior Developer - Quality Engineering, to work with the Native Apps team to support the continued success and evolution of our CBC native apps. The CBC News and CBC Sports apps are used by millions of loyal Canadians across the country. We need someone committed to ensuring our Canadian audience has the best media experience possible. This is a level of exposure and impact that few other roles provide.

As part of the Agile team you will push the boundaries of quality engineering, work alongside iOS and Android product developers and stay abreast of the latest tools and technologies for quality engineering for mobile development. You will have the opportunity to take a deeper dive into the technical areas you find most exciting, pushing the limits of the tools to ensure a quality end user experience.

How you will make an impact:

You are an experienced mobile automation developer or developer with a Quality Engineering mindset looking to apply and build upon your skills in:

  • Building a first-class Mobile News app that audience members want to spend time on.

  • Understanding the importance of accessibility and knowing what it takes to meet the needs of all users.

  • Be involved in wireframes and design (UX/UI) reviews.

What you bring to our team:

  • Three or more years of experience in a mobile quality engineering role or a mobile development role with a focus on automated testing and delivery pipelines

  • Possess a degree (BA, BSc) or diploma in a Software Development, Science or Engineering related discipline, delivered by a recognized learning institution

  • Demonstrated ability to drive innovation and improvements on overall quality processes

  • Experience in and ability to implement and drive end to end quality management, including developing and monitoring quality standards and measurements

  • Experience using software development skills to design and enhance test automation frameworks and approaches as well as developing test strategies for product teams

  • Be able to analyze the tradeoffs between investing in manual or automated testing and guide the team in understanding when each is appropriate

  • Experience coaching teams to adopt a quality mindset and practice quality engineering

  • Experience helping developers understand how to write testable code and perform unit testing

  • Knowledge of different types of functional and non-functional testing (eg. cross device, cross browser cross platform)

  • Experience developing test pipelines in a CI/CD/CT environment

  • Knowledge and experience in using multiple programming languages (Note: examples given are the tools currently in use by the team or tools we would like to try):

  • Kotlin & Java

  • Continuous Integration Platforms (e.g. CircleCI)

  • Firebase

  • Debugging Proxies (e.g. Charles, Postman, etc)

  • Mocking Frameworks (e.g. Mockito)

  • Unit Testing Frameworks (e.g. JUnit)

  • UI Testing Frameworks (e.g. Espresso)

  • Cross platform frameworks like Kotlin Multiplatform

  • Automation Testing frameworks (e.g. Appium)

  • Build Tools (e.g. Gradle)

  • Browserstack for Native Mobile Apps

Assets:

  • Have exposure to test automation for a variety of deployment environments, devices and platforms.

  • Possess broad skill sets on various types of tests, their design and execution patterns.

  • Have experience in automating testing of high-traffic, media-rich mobile apps, including performance and load testing.

  • Have ability to lead and connect with people inside and outside of the team (eg. other product teams, stakeholders as necessary).
