What You’ll Be Doing

Operating under a national mandate, the Leveraged Finance team provides solutions such as mezzanine financing, acquisition financing and other structured financings to mid-market clients in a diversified set of Canadian industries.

CIBC Leveraged Finance is a team of professionals and support staff with expertise in senior and subordinated cash-flow lending to Canadian middle-market businesses. The team has a three-pronged mandate: i) providing national coverage of private equity sponsors; ii) leading financing of highly-structured, event-based transactions; and iii) providing ongoing support to our existing client base. Our focus is on providing our clients creative financing solutions, value-added ideas and industry leading quality service, by delivering the full suite of CIBC’s product offerings to clients.

As an Analyst, Leveraged Finance you will lead the preparation of annual review of existing clients across the portfolio, prepare deal announcements and presentation powerpoints and manage the team excel database of deal metrics. Analysts will also partner with other Leveraged Finance team members on new deals to complete industry research, comparable and precedent transaction metrics, pricing and returns analysis and powerpoint pitch decks. Through these workstreams, Analysts will gain exposure to transactions of different sizes, end-markets and structures.

Analysts will participate in ongoing training and development sessions and receive ongoing coaching from Leveraged Finance team members with the goal of progressing and becoming a Leveraged Finance Associate in 24-36 months.

This position will be located in the Toronto office, primarily covering a portfolio of clients and evaluating new opportunities while also interacting with the wider team members across the country.

How You’ll Succeed

  • Client First –You will attend discussions with client management (executive, financial and operational) in order to assess client’s financing needs. Perform comprehensive financial/non-financial analysis and risk assessment of credit proposals. Assist in preparation of financing proposals (structuring terms and conditions including security, covenants and pricing) to properly reflect and compensate CIBC for assessed risk. Prepare draft recommendations on credit submissions and investment proposals to present to senior management. Assist with comprehensive due diligence on all transactions.

  • Relationship Building – Develop good relations with internal customers, external customers and general industry contacts to generate new referrals and business opportunities and to maintain a window on the market.

  • Collaboration - Partner with your team to connect clients with opportunities. Monitor and supervise a portfolio of senior and subordinated debt accounts. Manage relationships with borrowers and Relationship Managers. Monitor account performance and industry trends. Maintain a proactive approach to continuous risk assessment and report observations. Assist in negotiation of terms and conditions of proposals.

  • Business acumen. You have working knowledge of commercial lending, including a focus on specialized senior and subordinated lending products (i.e., structured/acquisition financings, project financings, loan syndication) and other CIBC group core products and services. Knowledge of business, legal, tax, banking and regulatory framework affecting financial requirements of customers. You have strong written and verbal communication skills to present financial information to clients.

Who You Are

  • You have a BBA or similar undergraduate degree . Specialization in Finance or Accounting are considered an asset, as well as if you are working towards other financial designations (i.e. MBA, CA, CBV, CMA, CFA etc.) but not necessary.

  • You have prior experience in a commercial credit and/or equity investment environment. You understand lending principles, procedures and practices, credit assessment and industry and competitive analysis.

  • You are able to work in a dynamic environment , prioritizing tasks to meet client demands and changing market conditions.

  • You are a strong communicator . You have strong written and verbal communication skills

  • You have strong organizational skills with the ability to meet tight deadlines and demonstrate attention to detail
