In support of achieving excellence and business results through safe, reliable operations, our LifeX division is currently hiring for a Senior Technical Specialist for the role of Responsible Systems Engineer: Nuclear Systems . This opportunity places the individual in a fast paced and challenging environment within the Bruce Power Life Extension and Major Component Replacement programs and provides an effective learning atmosphere for experienced engineers looking for growth opportunities.

This is a permanent, full-time position which offers a competitive benefits, compensation and pension package and is located on site in Tiverton, Ontario.

What will you be responsible for:

For Major Component (MCR) units the LifeX Engineering section is the Responsible System and Component technical authority (RSE and RCE) for modified operating (MO) or laid up (LU) systems associated with refurbishment projects and maintenance (excluding major components). As such you will be part of a team responsible for providing technical expertise and advice for troubleshooting plant equipment, defining and planning MCR scope, asset preservation during layup and providing nuclear system engineering support to operations, maintenance, projects, and work management. As a Senior Technical Specialist, you will be responsible to support the Section Manager, by providing Nuclear Systems related expertise within the section.

In addition, you will be providing support and mentoring of other engineers in the section and providing support for operations and maintenance personnel for on an as needed basis.

  • Analyze station technical problems and respond to Engineering Input Requests (EIRs), Engineering Requests (ERs) and stakeholder input requests. Provide advice, assess proposed solutions and/or identify potential solutions.

  • Assist operations, maintenance, and project staff by contributing to the resolution of nuclear systems technical problems and implementation of approved solutions.

  • Provide advice to Operations, Maintenance, and project staff to allow them to troubleshoot problems and/or better understand, sustain, and improve performance of nuclear system.

  • Keep informed regarding station performance of nuclear system. Identify potential performance issues and recommend alternatives to deal with them to improve subsequent MCRs.

  • Continuously pursue the accumulation of lessons learned and actively implement them, or guide others in their implementation, in future MCR units.

  • Work with all the station staff, project teams and support staff to solve equipment problems related to the MCR units. This would include, operations, maintenance, supply chain, chemistry, environment, design engineering and contract maintenance etc.

  • Assist in the development of staff technical expertise, consistent with the direction of the Manager.

  • Keep informed of the MCR status and important issues and provide input to operations.

  • Perform other duties as required.

Knowledge and Skills:

  • Detailed knowledge and understanding of nuclear power plant nuclear systems design and operation.

  • Demonstrated ability to achieve task results consistent with requirements for safety, quality, quantity, and resource allowance.

  • Good communication skills, written and verbal and an ability to deliver technical presentations to a variety of audiences.

  • Demonstrated ability to interact positively with others by developing trust, mutual respect, and cooperative working relationships.

  • Demonstrated ability to adapt to changing priorities, deadlines, and heavy work loads.

  • Demonstrated attention to detail and accuracy.

  • Demonstrated ability to work independently, take initiative, and be self-motivated.

  • Proven ability to write and review technical documents as applicable.

  • Strong leadership skills and high degree of accountability and engagement with team.

  • History of demonstrating strong analytical, problem solving and decision-making capability.

  • High degree of initiative, self-motivation, flexibility, and ability to work with minimal guidance or supervision in a team environment.

  • Ability to lead multi-disciplined teams to solve problems (ex. Complex troubleshooting, Task Analysis Meetings, Engineering Evaluations, etc.)

  • Knowledge of Maximo is required, searching for work orders, material, action requests.

  • Have a broad knowledge of station components, systems, and processes. This would include nuclear.

  • Demonstrated Technical Conscience by bringing concerns forward that would challenge plant safety or production.

  • Possessing a multidisciplinary knowledge of engineering will be considered as an asset (e.g. some knowledge in mechanical systems, fluid flows).

  • Possessing qualifications in troubleshooting will be considered as an asset.

Education and Experience:

  • Completion of a 4-year bachelor’s university degree in Engineering is required.

  • A period of over 6 years and up to and including 8 years is considered necessary to gain this experience.

  • P.Eng designation, or the ability to obtain a P.Eng designation is considered an asset.

  • Experience with the design/operation of a CANDU plant nuclear systems is regarded as an asset.
