Helio Health Inc. Peer Specialist - Recovery Center in Syracuse, New York

PEER SPECIALIST FULL TIME for Helio Health's Behavioral Healthcare Recovery Center in Syracuse, NY

Tuesday through Friday 9am-5:30pm and Saturday 9:30am-6pm

Job Description:

  • The Peer Specialist position assists individuals in recovery with articulating personal goals for recovery using their recovery experience.

  • Will assist individuals in recovery with creating Wellness Recovery Action Plans (WRAP) as needed, as well as taking steps to achieve personal goals for recovery, and finding self-help groups, establishing self-help groups, or finding other recovery focused groups.

  • Use lived experience to refer individuals or their families to healthy leisure opportunities or community resources that may be helpful.

  • Will use and teach problem solving techniques to individuals and groups, lead discussions on methods to overcome common problems in daily living.

  • Discuss methods on overcoming negative self-talk, identifying and overcoming fears, and identifying signs of potential relapse.

  • Teach and role model the value of the individual recovery experience.

  • Participates in program administrative and clinical committees as assigned.

  • Represents Helio Health, Inc. to the community; promotes agency values within the community.

  • Performs quality assurance activities

  • Other duties as assigned

Qualifications:

  • High School Graduate/Equivalency Required

  • Valid NYS Driver’s License Required

  • Certified Peer Recovery Advocate (CRPA) preferred or in process for CRPA

  • One year of Human Service experience preferred

  • An individual does not need to be in recovery him/herself, but must be able to confer empathy through lived experiences

  • Entry level knowledge of the biopsychosocial process of substance use disorders/recovery, behavioral health, self-help group process, recovery process and principles of recovery.

  • Knowledge of signs/symptoms of mental health disorders and substance use disorders

  • Ability to relate effectively with staff, clients & professional community

  • Good oral and written communication skills

  • Sound judgment and cultural competency

  • Proficiency with basic computer applications and smart phone applications
