Your role

Radio-Canada Ontario is seeking a dynamic and enthusiastic senior editor with strong journalistic skills and extensive experience in digital news to join the daily news team in Ontario. This position is based in Sudbury but comes with an inter-regional mandate.

You will collaborate on the Radio-Canada Ontario website and its associated digital platforms, writing news articles under tight deadlines. You are expected to create and organize digital news content and enhance articles with multimedia elements to maximize their value for the audience.

You may be called upon to write and present a combination of headlines and local, regional, national, and international news for both the web and radio.

Working in a highly integrated newsroom, you may also contribute reports and news content on other platforms as needed.

Responsibilities:

  • Demonstrate and cultivate exceptional skills in continuous news writing, editing, and assembling, adhering to Radio-Canada’s style and formats under tight deadlines. Work in compliance with CBC/Radio-Canada’s journalistic policies, programming standards, and practices.

  • Edit and write content for publication on Radio-Canada Ontario’s websites, with a particular focus on northern and southwestern Ontario, apps, and associated social media platforms.

  • Prepare and deliver news bulletins on-air for the entire province, as required.

  • Operate under the direction of a producer while taking initiative and demonstrating sound judgment.

  • Coordinate the activities of others as necessary, maintaining close collaboration with fellow journalists.

Main tasks:

  • Quickly draft breaking news content for digital platforms.

  • Select photos and audio/video clips to accompany online stories.

  • Critically review content and materials produced by others.

  • Write, edit, assemble, and publish digital content clearly and concisely for a national audience.

  • Manage and update the homepage for Radio-Canada Sudbury and Windsor.

  • Ensure that the website and reports align with daily priorities.

  • Conduct interviews to support web production, write texts, and edit clips for radio.

  • Gather information from various sources and report on it.

  • Rewrite content as needed to best suit the format of the target platform.

  • Ensure all texts adhere to standard grammar rules and Radio-Canada Sudbury and Windsor’s style, including proper spelling and capitalization.

  • Prepare and write articles and headlines based on information from reporters, wire services, CBC, or original sources.

  • Use content from other SRC/CBC platforms for digital services: write and format stories with compelling headlines, photos, videos, audio content, and illustrations, using the latest audience insights and metrics, and drawing from various sources, including the shows Matins sans frontières, Matin du Nord, and Jonction 11-17. Gather reports prepared by Radio-Canada reporters in Northern and Southwestern Ontario and beyond on local, regional, national, and international issues.

  • Use content from other CBC/Radio-Canada platforms for digital services, creating engaging stories with striking headlines, photos, videos, audio content, and illustrations, drawing from audience metrics and various sources.

  • Occasionally produce reports, interviews, or live-to-tape segments for radio.

  • Edit show-related texts, including enhanced audio file segments, as required.

  • Prepare, organize, and read news bulletins on-air for the province, especially on weekends, as needed.

  • Handle assignment follow-ups at the end of the day, if required.

  • Perform any other related tasks.

You possess:

  • A university degree (or equivalent) in journalism, communications, or related fields

  • Five (5) years of directly related experience, including demonstrable knowledge of online and digital news media, proven journalistic writing skills, and knowledge of Radio-Canada’s digital and broadcast sectors

  • Extensive knowledge of Ontario’s various markets, as well as regional, national, and international issues

  • The ability to write a wide range of material related to news and current events

  • Proven experience and aptitude for writing and editing following best practices and style guides for digital platforms

  • Skills in selecting and preparing photos and videos to enhance reports

  • Experience identifying potential legal issues or journalistic standards concerns in digital content

  • Strong editorial judgment for evaluating information and the ability to work effectively under pressure in a fast-paced newsroom

  • Ability to assess a story’s value for online and radio audiences

  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills, with a strong team spirit

  • Proficiency in English.

Candidates may be subject to skills and knowledge testing.
