Job Description Required Qualifications: As per Civil Service standards and specifications. Must have taken and passed the specific job related Civil Service examination and be reachable on the appropriate Civil Service list. This position might provide insufficient acceptors therefore a non-competitive NY HELPS appointment may be made. Candidate must have one year of full-time service as a laboratory animal caretaker in a research facility including but not limited to hospitals, universities, institutions, or laboratories; or two years of full-time experience in the handling and care of live vertebrate animals in other than a residential setting; OR Certification as an Assistant Laboratory Animal Technician or higher by the American Association for Laboratory Animal Science and one year of full-time experience in the handling and care of live vertebrate animals in other than a residential setting. Brief Description of Duties: Provide animal caretaker duties as well as supervisory responsibilities in compliance with all DLAR policies and procedures. Maintain Laboratory animals, clean, feed, water and make daily inspections. Monitor animals for disease, washes, sterilizes cages and other equipment; sanitize and buff rooms, wash laundry, take daily census, make cage cards, take daily refuse to dumpsters, mate wean and sex animals. Schedule and make work assignments for student assistants. Supervise work of animal care student assistants. Provide on the job training and instructions in the care of animals. Receive shipments, assist in veterinary care activities. Assist in the performance of non-routine/difficult tasks. Other duties or projects as assigned as appropriate to rank and departmental mission. Special Notes: This is a full-time position, 40 hours per week, shift 7:00 a.m. to 3:30 p.m., pass days varied. Weekend work required. FLSA Nonexempt position, eligible for the overtime provisions of the FLSA. Mandatory rehire roster candidates have preference. SG 8 Hiring Rate $39,215, plus location pay of $4,000 annually. The selected candidate must successfully clear a background investigation. This position may be designated 55 b/c and is subject to verification of applicant eligibility. This title is part of the New York Hiring for Emergency Limited Placement Statewide Program (NY HELPS). For the duration of the NY HELPS Program, this title may be filled via a non-competitive appointment, which means no examination is required but all candidates must meet the minimum qualifications of the title for which they apply. At a future date, it is expected employees hired under NY HELPS will have their non-competitive employment status converted to competitive status, without having to compete in an examination. Employees will then be afforded with all of the same rights and privileges of competitive class employees of New York State. While serving permanently in an NY HELPS title, employees may take part in any promotion examination for which they are qualified. Applicants must meet the posted qualifications/job requirements, legitimate operating needs of the department and have the ability to perform duties and responsibilities satisfactorily.
