The Center for Health Statistics (https://www.health.state.mn.us/data/mchs/index.html) , located within MDH’s Community Health Division, is currently seeking a skilled communicator with training in systematic survey data collection and statistical analysis, to join our team as a Senior Research Scientist!

This position plans, organizes and carries out high-level research and surveillance activities to support MDH work on commercial tobacco use, adolescent health, and health equity. The Senior Research Scientist also:

  • Supports the Commercial Tobacco Prevention and Control Program by analyzing and reporting on commercial tobacco use data collected for the Behavioral Risk Factor Surveillance System, the Minnesota Survey of Adult Substance Use, and other state and national surveys.

  • Co-leads the Minnesota Student Survey Data Users Group to promote information sharing among users of the Minnesota Student Survey and the Minnesota Student Survey Interagency Team.

  • Represents MDH’s commercial tobacco data on the Statewide Epidemiological Outcomes Workgroup.

This position is eligible for telework to applicants who reside in Minnesota, Wisconsin, Iowa, North Dakota, or South Dakota. Position locations will be determined by the top candidate and will be based out one of the following MDH district office locations: St. Paul, St. Cloud, Duluth, Rochester, Marshall, Bemidji, Fergus Falls.

Minimum Qualifications

Four (4) years of experience in data science, analytics, interoperability, data equity, informatics, business intelligence, artificial intelligence, and data strategy, data modernization, governance, and research.

Experience should include:

  • Designing, planning, organizing, implementing, directing or evaluating data-related projects including needs assessments, program evaluation, research studies using primary or secondary database linkage efforts, data analysis and interpretation, management information systems or data collection, and monitoring systems in health-related programs.

  • Collecting, cleaning, and analyzing survey data.

  • SPSS or comparable statistical analysis package experience.

Qualifications to be further assessed during the interview process:

  • Experience working with diverse communities and analyzing health data through a health equity lens with the ability to present findings to a diverse audience.

  • Ability to conceive, organize and carryout research projects independently.

A related doctorate may substitute for twenty-four (24) months of experience; master’s degree may substitute for eighteen (18) months of experience; bachelor’s degree may substitute for twelve (12) months of experience.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Degree in epidemiology, economics, environmental health, psychology, health statistics, or health services.

  • Experience with large multi-year databases.

  • Experience with tobacco research.

  • Experience with GIS and/or Tableau.
