Join our dynamic team at the Minnesota Department of Health (MDH), where your passion for public health can make a tangible impact on the well-being of all Minnesotans. This position is responsible for planning, implementing, and leading the state’s climate resilience goal area for extreme heat. As a Planner Principal State, you will establish, through planning and administration, statewide goals for new areas/projects implemented by the Environmental Impacts Analysis (EIA) Unit primarily related to climate change impacts on public health and other environmental health issues.

Primary responsibilities include:

  • Planning and implementing goals and objectives related to the c limate resilience goal area.

  • Researching the health impacts of climate change.

  • Developing a process for a new state-level climate action plan.

  • Promoting health-protective messaging.

  • Collaborating with partners to revise the Minnesota Extreme Heat Toolkit.

This is a temporary position with an anticipated end date of June 30 th , 2025.

This position will have the option of teleworking; however, it will be based on the business needs of the unit and is at supervisory discretion.

Minimum Qualifications

Three (3) years professional experience that includes strategic planning, policy development, climate change and public health, or climate mitigation/adaptation.

A degree in public health, environmental health, or closely related field may count toward professional experience as follows: PhD substitute for (24 months) of experience; Master’s degree substitute for eighteen (18) months of experience; Bachelor’s degree may substitute for twelve (12) months of experience; and Associate degree may substitute for six (6) months of experience.

Additional minimum qualifications to be assessed during the interview:

  • Background in developing public health and/or emergency preparedness tools and resources.

  • Experience communicating technical information verbally, and in writing to a wide audience of professional and lay individuals.

  • Proven ability to manage multiple overlapping projects that engage a variety of stakeholders.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree or higher in public health, environmental health, or closely related field.

  • Understanding of principles and practices of research and analysis techniques sufficient to understand and evaluate research studies and perform literature searches, which includes evaluating and synthesizing scientific/technical information related to the health impacts of climate change and summarizing results in written and verbal form.

  • Demonstrated leadership ability to motivate and guide self and other staff to work effectively with stakeholders to achieve goals.

  • Ability to analyze, synthesize, and share information from scientific publications, grey literature, and community assessment reports with a variety of audiences.

  • Knowledge of planning principles, climate science, environmental health, climate adaptation strategies, and health assessment methods sufficient to develop statewide plans and organize specific projects.
