This Laboratory Scientist 2 will conduct complicated microbiology laboratory testing, including mycobacteriology and mycology. This position will also utilize microbiology techniques and specialized molecular diagnostic assays to detect pathogens, perform phenotypic culture-based assays, perform antibiotic susceptibility testing, and characterize human infectious diseases. Additionally, the position provides capacity and general support to the Microbiology Unit and consultation to outside partners and collaborators.

Minimum Qualifications

  • Two years of testing experience in a Clinical Microbiology or Public Health Laboratory, or equivalent.

Minimum Qualifications to be assessed during the interview:

  • Knowledge of processing clinical specimens and testing for the detection and identification of bacterial and fungal pathogens.

  • Knowledge of microbiology and antimicrobial susceptibility testing.

  • The chosen candidate must have successfully completed a minimum of five semester/seven quarter college credits in microbiology, immunology, or related subjects. Applicants must provide evidence of course completion prior to employment.

A Bachelor's degree in Microbiology, Biology, Clinical Laboratory Science (or Medical Laboratory Science), or a related field may substitute for one year of experience. A Master’s degree may substitute for 18 months of experience; A PhD may substitute for 2 years of experience.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience using MALDI-TOF for bacterial and fungal identification.

  • Clinical laboratory experience in specialty areas of bacteriology; including broth microdilution, disk diffusion, and ETEST antimicrobial susceptibility testing.

  • Experience of working in a laboratory required to follow CLIA rules and regulations.

  • Experience with molecular biology methods such as polymerase chain reaction (PCR) testing.

  • Experience in implementation of new microbiology assays, including preparing a validation report.

  • Knowledge of quality assurance and quality management systems.

  • Knowledge of the principles, techniques, quality and practices in clinical bacteriology (including mycobacteriology) and mycology.

  • Ability to perform advanced specialized tasks including examination of specimens using classic microbiology techniques to isolate and identify pathogenic organisms.

  • Skills to provide training for other laboratory employees or students.

  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills.

  • Ability to prepare comprehensive work reports and interpret test results.

  • Certification as a Medical Laboratory Scientist.
