These Influenza Student Worker positions will conduct surveillance activities for Vaccine Preventable Diseases with a particular focus on influenza. These positions will also help support other vaccine preventable diseases as needed.

Primary Responsibilities:

  • Participate in data collection using chart reviews, structured telephone interviews, and other surveillance methods.

  • Support data collection, data entry, data management, chart reviews, and quantitative and qualitative data analysis.

  • Support the general functions of the section and its role in supporting the overall objectives of preventing vaccine preventable diseases.

  • Assist VPD Unit staff in epidemiological investigations of cases and outbreaks of communicable diseases.

These positions are hybrid in nature, which will require occasional work to be completed in the St. Paul office and other potential travel duties. Reimbursement for authorized business travel expenses is provided according to bargaining unit guidelines.

This vacancy announcement will be used to fill up to two (2) Student Worker Para Professional Senior positions.

These positions are part-time and will work up to 20 hours per week. The specific hours and days of work are flexible within 8 a.m. and 4:30 p.m. Monday through Friday. These positions are anticipated to last through August 30, 2026, or until the selected candidate completes their educational program, whichever occurs first.

This posting will be used to fill multiple vacancies as they become available through 08/30/2024. Candidates will remain under consideration throughout the duration of the posting period unless notified otherwise.

Minimum Qualifications

The following minimum qualifications must be clearly demonstrated on the applicant’s resume/application to be considered for these positions:

  • Completion of two (2) years of post-secondary education

Student Worker Eligibility: To be eligible for appointment as a Student Worker Paraprofessional Senior you must be enrolled in a post-secondary or graduate program or plan to enroll within three months. Students may be "off" for the summer or for one semester/quarter and remain employed as a student worker, but such absences cannot exceed one semester/quarter in a year. If you are enrolled at a credit-granting institution you must carry at least six semester/nine quarter credits. If enrolled at a non-credit granting institution or one that only offers one credit per class, you must be taking two or more classes per semester/quarter. Any lesser credit (class) load will be treated as a semester/quarter off. Graduate students must be enrolled in at least two courses or making progress on a dissertation. You will be asked to complete an Educational Verification form prior to appointment.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Currently accepted or enrolled in a degree-seeking graduate program (MPH, MS, or PhD) in epidemiology, environmental health or related public health field.

  • Career goals in applied infectious disease epidemiology. Ability to develop and maintain effective interpersonal relations with co-workers, supervisors, and health care professionals, and to work collaboratively as part of a team.

  • Experience with and able to understand medical terminology.

  • Experience reviewing and interpreting medical charts. Ability to communicate effectively orally and in writing with members of the public and health care professionals.

  • Ability to prioritize tasks, manage time and adapt to change, and possess critical thinking skills and judgement.

  • Ability to collect and enter data. Ability to work collaboratively as part of a team.

Additional Requirements

  • The selected candidates will be required to successfully pass a background check and employment reference check.

  • This position does not require a valid driver's license, however, there is travel required, which the candidate will be required to fulfill.
