This position will act as a Highway Systems Electrician to perform repairs, revisions, maintenance, and installation of MnDOT traffic signals, roadway lighting, ITS systems, and other electrical and electronic devices. To review, monitor, and maintain records of the operational conditions of those systems. To assure that electrical installations associated with MnDOT District traffic control devices comply with national and local electrical codes, and with MnDOT construction specifications and standards, and are properly and safely operating.

Minimum Qualifications

  • Possession of a current Minnesota Class A Master Electrician or Journeyworker A Electrician’s license. If obtaining licensure through reciprocity, licensure documentation from the MN Department of Labor & Industry must be provided to MnDOT HR prior to starting employment.

  • A valid Minnesota Class D Driver’s License.

  • Ability and skill in the use of hand and power tools sufficient to install, alter, maintain, and repair electrical and electronic systems and equipment in the field.

  • Knowledge of State and National Electrical and Safety Codes, construction safety and standard electrical practices, techniques, materials, and tools sufficient to ensure that work and materials comply with codes, and to select supplies, materials, and work methods to apply to electrical projects.

  • Ability to manage workload using computerized databases and spreadsheets.

  • Human relation skills sufficient to communicate to and effectively work with others including those within MnDOT as well as other governmental agencies and the general public.

  • Ability to perform maintenance duties while working at heights up to 70 feet.

Preferred Qualifications

  • A Minnesota CDL, Class A or B License without Airbrake Restrictions.

  • Experience with traffic signals and/or lighting systems.

  • Experience in roadway construction practices as applicable to signal and lighting maintenance.

  • Knowledge and application of the Manual on Uniform Traffic Control Devices.

Physical Requirements

A pre-placement physical examination is required for this position. Current employees who have successfully bid or are moving into a different functional work area will be required to complete the pre-employment physical exam for the area they are moving into. The scope of the physical exam will be limited to whether the employee can safely and effectively perform the essential functions of the job, with or without reasonable accommodation, in compliance with state and federal law.

In addition, the incumbent will be subject to drug and alcohol testing. New employees must pass a pre-placement drug test for evidence of use of marijuana, cocaine, opiates, phencyclidine (PCP) and amphetamines (MDMA, MDA and MDEA) and acetylmorphine (6-AM).
