MNIT MDE manages the technical functions critical to managing public education in Minnesota; supporting systems including funding disbursement and large-scale, public-facing school performance data reporting.

Join MNIT supporting the Department of Education as a Data Lake Infrastructure Engineer, where you'll play a crucial role in shaping the future of our data infrastructure!

As a Data Lake Infrastructure Engineer, you'll be at the forefront of designing, developing, and maintaining our cutting-edge Azure Databases and Data Lakes. You'll use your advanced cloud computing and operations expertise to build and support the Microsoft Azure data lake infrastructure, ensuring it meets the dynamic data science needs of MNIT MDE. Your mission? To guarantee the efficient, secure, and effective operation of our Azure data lake production environment.

In this exciting role, you'll leverage your deep knowledge of Azure data lake development, production, and SQL database administration to solve complex technical issues and continuously enhance system performance. You'll also have the opportunity to explore new data lake technologies, recommend innovative changes, and maximize the potential of these technologies to drive our organization's success.

This position is currently eligible for full-time telework:

  • Telework for Minnesota IT Services allows an employee to perform work from a telework location and an employee may be required to be in the office based on business needs and other dependencies.

  • Candidates residing outside of Minnesota and bordering states (Iowa, North Dakota, South Dakota, or Wisconsin) require additional review prior to telework approval upon becoming a finalist.

  • Candidates located in Minnesota, or a bordering state, do not require additional review.

Minimum Qualifications

Candidates must clearly demonstrate all of the following qualifications in their resume:

Position requires a minimum of five (5) years of high-level expertise in data analysis, data modeling, data flow diagramming, data loading, data cleansing, data validation, and data processing automation.

Experience must also include the following:

  • Administration, development, and maintenance of Azure production data lakes, including the use of Azure Synapse Analytics and Azure Data Lake Storage (ADLS2).

  • Advanced skills in SQL query programming, subroutine programming (stored procedures), and relational database design principles.

  • Proficiency with cloud data transformation and validation tools, such as JSON, Parquet, and Delta Lake formats, Apache Spark clusters, and Databricks.

  • Ability to deliver effective verbal or written communications that facilitate a mutual understanding amongst all parties.

  • Customer service skills that include active listening, empathy, and problem-solving.

A master’s degree in Information Technology or an IT related field substitutes for three (3) years of experience, OR an IT related bachelor’s degree substitutes for two (2) years, OR an IT related associate’s degree substitutes for one (1) year.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Advanced Cloud Computing Experience: Demonstrated advanced expertise in building and maintaining Azure data lake services, including the use of a medallion lakehouse architecture.

  • Security and Infrastructure as Code: Experience with Azure data lake security and using Azure formation templates for infrastructure as code. Professional Development: Proven track record of staying current with industry standards, best practices, and new technologies in data lake infrastructure and cloud computing.

  • Leadership and Mentoring: Ability to provide mentoring and support services to team members, ensuring continuous improvement and knowledge sharing.

  • Project Management: Experience applying project management techniques to address technical issues and enhance system performance.

  • Research and Innovation: Capacity to investigate and recommend new data lake technologies, contributing to the continuous modernization and optimization of data pipelines and reporting systems.

  • Database Performance and Security: Advanced knowledge in database performance analysis, monitoring, evaluation tools, and database security system tools and design considerations.

  • Adaptability and Critical Thinking: Strong adaptability to multiple demands, shifting priorities, ambiguity, and rapid changes, coupled with in-depth critical and analytic thinking skills to solve complex problems.
