This Biosafety Coordinator position within the Infectious Disease Laboratory (IDL) is responsible for providing biosafety training and practices throughout the IDL. This position will plan, direct and implement evaluation of hazards associated with handling biological materials, the spread of multi-drug resistant pathogens, threats of emerging pathogens, select agents, and will assist with response and planning for a range of biological threats. This position will work collaboratively to improve communications around biosafety, biosafety responses, and emergency response to biological threats throughout the laboratory and with clinical laboratory partners.

Primary responsibilities will include:

  • Promoting a culture of safety within the IDL.

  • Risk assessment and hazard mitigation.

  • Training and assessment on biosafety procedures.

  • Providing outreach to members of the Minnesota Laboratory System.

  • Coordinating biosafety with a range of partner organizations.

Minimum Qualifications

To facilitate proper years of service crediting, please ensure that your resume clearly describes your experience in the areas listed and indicates the beginning and ending month and year for each job held.

  • Three years clinical microbiology laboratory experience.

  • Experience working in a BSL-3/ABSL-3 facility.

Minimum Qualifications to be assessed during interview:

  • Experience writing facility risk assessments.

  • Experience with classical microbiology and virology techniques.

  • Experience with molecular diagnostic assays including real-time polymerase chain reaction (PCR).

  • Ability to prepare and make effective oral and written presentations.

  • The chosen candidate must have successfully completed a minimum of five semester/seven quarter college credits in microbiology, immunology, or related subjects. Applicants must provide evidence of course completion prior to employment.

A Bachelor's degree in Microbiology, Public Health, or a related field may substitute for one year of experience. A Master’s degree may substitute for 18 months of experience; A PhD may substitute for 2 years of experience.

Preferred Qualifications

  • ABSA credentials.

  • Experience working with laboratories limited to BSL-2 facilities.

  • Experience working with a diverse range of individuals and communication styles

  • Experience preparing and delivering effective oral and written presentations.

  • Ability to work independently and manage time, workload, and priorities without day-to-day supervision of activities.

  • Demonstrated ability to provide training for other laboratory employees, students, or other trainees, to support a collaborative team environment.

Physical Requirements

Occasional transportation of up to 20 pounds.
