Help make an impact on the health of Minnesotans by providing leadership and supervision as the Asthma and Respiratory Health Unit Supervisor in the Center for Health Promotion at the Minnesota Department of Health.
The Asthma Unit Supervisor will lead efforts to improve asthma care and quality of life for people who have asthma in Minnesota by overseeing the design, implementation, and evaluation of stakeholder engagement, communications, programs, policies and epidemiologic assessments at the state and local level and in support of national efforts including the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. A primary focus will be on advancing equity focused strategies and action steps to improve health outcomes for communities disproportionately impacted by asthma.
Responsibilities of the position include, but are not limited to, the following:
Advance state goals and objectives for the prevention and management of asthma and respiratory health.
Engage and strengthen partnerships with community, health systems, local public health and other stakeholders.
Provide technical assistance, consultation and communication to outside agencies and organizations across the state and nationally.
Supervise work of the Asthma Programs Unit staff.
Work may be conducted in-person in St. Paul, or as telework for applicants who reside in MN, IA, WI, ND, or SD, based on the business needs of the unit and supervisor discretion. Position location will be determined by the top candidate and will be based out of the closest Minnesota Department of Health office location: St. Paul, St. Cloud, Duluth, Rochester, Marshall, Bemidji, or Fergus Falls. Attendance to in person quarterly meetings in St. Paul is required and there will be additional periodic requirements in office based on the business needs of the unit and supervisor discretion.
Minimum Qualifications

Four (4) years of experience in asthma prevention or other chronic disease prevention program. Experience to include all of the following:
Strategic planning and project management.
Establishing working relationships with community members and planning groups such as non-profit organizations, community health boards, tribal nations and clinics, and health systems.
Oversight of public health grants and/or contracts.
Demonstrated leadership experience. Demonstrated leadership experience may include any of the following:
Experience as a supervisor, team lead, lead worker, OR project lead.
Completion of a State leadership development program, such as Emerging Leaders Institute (ELI) or Senior Leadership Institute (SLI).
Completion of a similar or equivalent leadership development program through another organization.
A paid or unpaid position leading a program or chairing a committee, such as an Employee Resource Group (ERG).This experience must also include:
1+ years of identifying issues, goals, and strategic actions.
100+ hours per year time commitment.
A degree in public health, public policy, epidemiology, community health, nursing, or medicine may count towards experience as follows:
Bachelor's = 12 months.
Master's = 18 months.
Doctoral = 24 months.
Knowledge and Skill to be assessed at interview:
Communication skills sufficient to effectively present, written and spoken ideas and reports, to stakeholders such as professional audiences and the public.
Knowledge of program planning, implementation, and evaluation.
Preferred Qualifications
Experience with asthma prevention and knowledge of environmental and non-environmental triggers of asthma.
Experience managing a statewide program and evaluating program performance.
Experience developing and submit documents such as reports and manuscripts for publication in peer-reviewed journals.
Experience with policy and systems-level change strategies.
Experience using data to guide program implementation.
Additional Requirements
Must successfully pass a background and reference check.
This employment does not require a valid driver's license, but it does demand occasional travel, which the candidate will be responsible for meeting.
