The Health Laboratory Surveyor provides surveillance and guidance to clinical laboratories who must comply with federal requirements of the Clinical Laboratory Improvement Amendments (CLIA).

Responsibilities for this position include:

  • Compile record information collected from onsite surveys to document compliance with federal regulations

  • Conduct periodic follow-up contact with laboratories

  • Monitor laboratory proficiency testing

  • Provide information to CLIA providers and others as requested and potentially attend legal proceedings

This position can be based out of either the St. Paul or St. Cloud office location.

Up to 50% of work time is spent onsite at laboratory facilities predominately located in the metropolitan and central regions of Minnesota. When not onsite, remaining follow-up work is performed by teleworking from your home office.

Occasional travel outside of the base region is expected, to survey lab facilities throughout the state of Minnesota.

The majority of work hours are between 8:00am - 4:30pm, Monday - Friday but candidates must be available for overnight travel. The need for overnight travel is determined by inspection location and workload.

Reimbursement for authorized business travel expenses is provided according to bargaining unit guidelines.

Minimum Qualifications

Two (2) years* of experience working in a clinical laboratory as a laboratory or medical technologist, bacteriologist, microbiologist, chemist, or other closely related health science position.

*A bachelors degree in Medical Technology, Microbiology, Chemistry, Biology or closely related health science field may substitute for one year of experience.

*A master’s degree in one of the above-mentioned areas will substitute for 18 months of experience.

Additional qualifications to be assessed in interview:

  • Human relations skills to achieve effective working relationships within the agency and externally

  • Ability to use a computer for preparation of all written documents and communication of laboratory compliance

  • Knowledge of acceptable clinical laboratory practices

Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience in a clinical laboratory conducting high complexity laboratory tests

  • Experience conducting internal quality assurance activities

  • Associates degree or higher in Medical Laboratory Technology

  • Experience supervising a clinical laboratory
