Paralegal - Litigation Team

*We are hiring for our Springfield, MA office location in a Hybrid setting where you will be onsite 3-5 days per week* .

The Opportunity

As a Paralegal, you will be an integral member of the Litigation Section of MassMutual's Law Department. The Litigation Section provides legal advice and support to the MassMutual enterprise in support of legal disputes, investigations, regulatory matters, and litigation. The individual contributor role participates in providing legal advice and support to internal business clients. This Paralegal role generally interacts and works with sophisticated business partners and other legal colleagues on a variety of litigation, pre-litigation, compliance, regulatory, investigative, and other active legal matters or disputes as they relate to actual or potential litigation that impacts MassMutual.

The Impact

Under limited guidance of an attorney, the Paralegal will provide support to attorneys in the Litigation Section and occasionally to legal professionals elsewhere in the Law Department. The Litigation Paralegal's responsibilities generally include, among other things, conducting complex legal research and analysis and advising attorneys on results. Drafting legal and business communications; drafting correspondence; reviewing and interpreting litigation and business documents, including contracts. Requesting and collecting information and materials from multiple sources; conducting collection and witness interviews; interacting with internal business partners and stakeholders and assisting in the overall case and file preparation of legal matters. Preparing and evaluating complex legal documentation to resolve problems and close matters. Tracking and identifying legal issues that require attorney consideration and clearly articulating such issues to attorneys. Monitoring new legislative, regulatory, and case law developments and assessing potential implications for the business. The Paralegal interacts with all levels, including leaders in the organization.

Specific responsibilities and focus for this role will include, and are not limited to:

  • Perform in-depth legal research

  • Conduct fact-gathering interviews with clients and witnesses

  • Manage discovery process including collections, review written discovery responses

  • Draft and review legal documents with some complexity

  • Draft correspondence

  • Summarize depositions, interrogatories, and other discovery-related progress

  • Maintain and update legal matter files

  • Monitor case schedules and filing deadlines

  • Perform statistical analysis and documentary research

  • Interact with business clients and provide case status reports and updates

  • Attend case meetings, including court appearances in support of attorneys, as needed

The Minimum Qualifications

  • Obtained Paralegal certificate from an accredited program with at least 8+ years of experience as a paralegal OR Bachelor's degree in Law, business or related major, in addition to a paralegal certificate

  • 5+ years working experience as a Litigation legal professional

  • 5+ years legal research experience using Westlaw and/or Lexis experience

  • Proficiency with electronic discovery databases and legal databases

  • Excellent verbal and written communications skills

  • Proficiency with Microsoft Office Suite

  • Agile and resilient; able to multitask, embrace change and manage well under pressure

  • Organized and able to manage tight deadlines in a fast-paced environment

  • Intellectually curious; seeks to understand

The Ideal Qualifications

  • Previous experience working in a Financial Service or Insurance organization

  • Previous experience working in the Litigation department within a large, matrix organization
