MassMutual Communications Consultant in Springfield, Massachusetts

The Opportunity

As a Communications Consultant, you will consult with and influence leaders on effective communication strategies enabling business growth and sales effectiveness. This consultant will deliver creative, engaging, and accurate messaging to best meet business needs while understanding the audience’s preferences for consuming information. They will monitor communication effectiveness and adjust as needed to ensure the business needs are met. They will also foster a continuous improvement mindset and willingness to experiment and learn. Key characteristics of those who hold this position are creativity, adaptability, drive, courage, and a service focus. This role will consist of working independently and collaborating in small and large teams. They could support the launch of various insurance and wealth management products or services, adoption of MassMutual’s digital platform, evolution of teaming in each firm, and other initiatives related to MassMutual Financial Advisors’ five strategic pillars.

The Team

The MassMutual Field Communication team consults with various business leaders, helping them achieve sales growth, change management, and process/system implementations. This role represents various stakeholders, including both field and home-office leaders and reaches a variety of audiences, including firm management, career agents, registered representatives, brokers, and field staff. This team is responsible for creating and executing external and internal communication strategic plans, presentations, talking points, and other materials of the highest caliber for various users and in multiple formats. They identify key communication needs through conducting primary research, develop strategic plans and messages, deploy various tactics across a full spectrum of digital and conventional communication channels (e.g., written, spoken, visual, video, social, etc.) and provide insights and recommendations based on the plan’s outcome.

The Impact

Within our dynamic industry, effective communication is critical to help our field force adapt to constant change and grow their businesses. Business leaders rely on their communication consultant to think critically and position themselves as a business partner who can create and implement an effective communication strategy to achieve measurable goals. This team works with business partners, including MassMutual Financial Advisor leadership, to identify communication needs and develop strategies and materials to implement effective communication solutions. It serves as a key internal communication contact for the business, providing counsel and ensuring consistency and quality of communications. It effectively collaborates with communication counterparts in other areas of the business (Product, Wealth Management, Customer Experience, Technology, HR, Strategic, Corporate, etc.) on integrated communications plans as required. It develops clear and concise written communications for a variety of internal audiences and platforms, including the company intranet, and participates on cross-business project teams as needed/required.

Minimum Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s Degree in communications, journalism, or related field.

  • 2+ years of communications experience.

  • Strong writing, editing, and verbal communication skills with demonstrated ability to write clearly and concisely for various digital channels on a variety of complex business topics.

  • Ability to interact and influence at all levels of the organization. Demonstrated ability to develop integrated communication plans that consider the needs of various audiences; work with communication partners (e.g., PR, Field Communications, etc.) as needed.

  • Commitment to understanding and applying communication best practices and innovative techniques as appropriate.

Ideal Qualifications

  • 5+ years of communications experience specific to internal/employee communications .

  • Experience with field-distribution channels like independent brokers, career agents and wholesalers.

  • Sense of urgency.

  • Ability to partner with people of diverse backgrounds, ideas, and experiences.

  • Attention to detail in a fast-paced environment.

  • Ability to act with integrity.
