The Minnesota Department of Transportation, Metro District is hiring twenty (20) Temporary Transportation Generalist positions at the following Metro Truck Station locations: Cedar (Richfield) Nights, Chaska, Eden Prairie Days, Eden Prairie Nights, Forest Lake, Golden Valley, Maryland (St. Paul) Nights, Mendota Nights, Plymouth, Shakopee, and Spring Lake Park.

Maintenance employees working the night shift for a period of three months or more are eligible for Night Premium Pay of $2.00/hour for all shifts which start between 7:00pm and 11:00pm per the current AFSCME union contract. This will apply to all hours worked between the hours of 7:00pm and 5:30am. The premium pay shall be IN ADDITION to the hourly rate of pay and any shift differential ($2.25 for assigned shifts working before 6:00am or after 6:00pm) the employee would otherwise be entitled to. The premium pay shall be included in all payroll calculations for shifts actually worked, but shall not apply during periods of paid leave, or in calculations of back-pay.

The Transportation Generalist maintains and reconstructs roadways; maintains traffic barriers; participates in bituminous road repair, culvert cleaning; guardrail repair; and maintains roadsides. In addition, this position will perform preventive maintenance on highway equipment; operate tractor mowers and small rollers; remove objects from roadways; set up traffic controls in high volume traffic and work associated with accidents, spill cleanup, rut repair, dead deer, etc. Additional duties include but are not limited to:

  • Performing landscaping duties on roadside (chipping of tree limbs, stump removal/ grinding)

  • Conducting rest area maintenance to wayside rests and scale areas (building and grounds maintenance, vegetation control, and parking surface repairs)

  • Driving and operating a variety of heavy equipment to perform snow and ice duties, maintaining roadways for snow and ice control which includes: removing snow from roadways and shoulders; applying anti-icing and de-icing chemicals on stretches of highway under slippery conditions; removing frozen ice and materials from culverts; performing night or dawn patrols; preparing and inspecting winter equipment, such as snowplow equipment, and cutting edges and sanders.

Minimum Qualifications

  • A valid Class B Commercial Driver's License (CDL) with no air brake restriction AND a tanker endorsement (MUST BE LISTED ON RESUME).

  • One (1) year of experience performing activities in any of the following: snow and ice, soils, road surface maintenance, roadside maintenance, bridge maintenance, signs, or related activities (roadway maintenance, driving commercial vehicles, commercial landscaping, operating heavy equipment or farm experience).

  • (Education): Successful completion of a Heavy Equipment Operation and Maintenance Program (of at least 60 semester credits; or 90 quarter credits) will substitute for one year of experience .

  • Working knowledge of English sufficient to read, write, speak and understand oral and written information; communicate with employees and the general public in-person or via two-way radio and other electronic devices; and to maintain routine written logs and simple records.

Physical Requirements

The physical demands of this job will vary, but typically requires lifting 100 pounds maximum with frequent lifting and/or carrying of objects such as 50-pound bags. This job also may require walking or standing to a significant degree on rough terrain or may involve sitting most of the time with pushing and pulling of arm and/or leg controls. This job will require strenuous manual labor including but not limited to digging, shoveling, hauling, crawling, bending, pushing, pulling and climbing. May require frequent exposure to weather elements year-round (cold and hot) on a daily basis as well as working near traffic and heavy equipment. Additional Requirements

All job offers are contingent upon the candidate possessing a valid driver's license (at the required level for the position), Driver's License Screening, Criminal Background Check, SEMA4 Records Check, Physical Exam, Drug Screening, Employment Verification and Reference Checks. A valid driver’s license at the required level for the position with NONE of the following: a major traffic conviction in the past 5 years OR 4 or more minor violations OR 3 or more at-fault accidents in the last 3 years OR any combination of minor violations and at-fault accidents totaling 4 or more occurrences will disqualify a candidate.

The incumbents will be subject to drug and alcohol testing. Individuals not currently in the random testing pool must pass a pre-placement drug test for evidence of use of marijuana, cocaine, opiates, phencyclidine (PCP), amphetamines and semi-synthetic opioids (i.e., hydrocodone, oxycodone, hydromorphone, oxymorphone).
