Mayo Clinic Research Fellow - Enteric Neuroscience Program (ENSP) in Rochester, Minnesota

Why Mayo Clinic

Mayo Clinic is top-ranked in more specialties than any other care provider according to U.S. News & World Report. As we work together to put the needs of the patient first, we are also dedicated to our employees, investing in competitive compensation and comprehensive benefit plans (https://jobs.mayoclinic.org/benefits/) – to take care of you and your family, now and in the future. And with continuing education and advancement opportunities at every turn, you can build a long, successful career with Mayo Clinic. You’ll thrive in an environment that supports innovation, is committed to ending racism and supporting diversity, equity and inclusion, and provides the resources you need to succeed.

Responsibilities

The Beyder Laboratory at Mayo Clinic's world-renowned Enteric Neuroscience Program (ENSP) is seeking a motivated post-doctoral fellow to join our dynamic team. We focus on cutting-edge research in the physiology of the gut-brain axis and enteric nervous system. Our mission is to uncover the fundamental mechanisms of mechanosensing and mechanotransduction in the gut and leverage these discoveries into answers to key questions in gut-brain health and disease.

Who We Are . Led by Dr. Arthur Beyder, a physician-scientist, our lab thrives in the collaborative environment of ENSP, working with a diverse group of leading ENSP and world-wide investigators. We are committed to exploring the gut's ability to sense mechanical forces and what that means for health and disease. Inspired by the 2021 Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine awarded for discoveries of mechanogated ion channels We address questions like – does the gut feel touch? Our research is published in top journals such as eLife, Gastroenterology, PNAS, and Cell, and we are backed by prestigious NIH grants, including the New Innovator Award.

Research Focus . You will lead cutting-edge NIH-funded projects centered on mechano-electrophysiology of tissues, cells and molecules. You’ll use state-of-the-art techniques and develop novel ones, like optogenetics and CRISPR-screens, pressure-patch-clamp, whole-cell electrophysiology with various mechanical stimuli, and mechanosensitive ion channel biophysics to explore the fascinating realm of mechanosensitive ion channels. Expect to integrate your findings with advanced imaging approaches, including calcium signaling assays and mechanobiology models, organoids, and patient-derived tissues. Your research will be at the heart of uncovering how these channels contribute to gut mechanobiology.

Qualifications . A Ph.D. with electrophysiology experience in physiology, neuroscience, biophysics, or a related field is preferred but not required. Most importantly, we are looking for passion for scientific discovery, problem-solving skills, and a drive for excellence and independence.

Why Join Us? The Beyder Lab is not just a place to work—it’s a place to grow, discover, and make a difference! With access to top-notch resources, mentorship, and training, you’ll have every opportunity to advance your career. Present your findings at major conferences, engage with the global research community, and mentor the next generation of scientists. We’re here to support your journey toward becoming an independent and impactful researcher.

Lab Culture . We believe in the power of teamwork, diversity, and celebrating our wins together. Expect a fun, inclusive atmosphere with regular lab retreats, social events, and shared learning experiences.
