Responsibilities

Works cooperatively with physicians and residents requesting information for studies and departmental planning with the State of Minnesota Central Registry, other cancer registries, and the American College of Surgeons governing organizations regarding data collected and with programmers on software changes and updates. The primary responsibility of the registrar is to assure that complete and accurate data are collected and maintained for all malignant disease and/or specific benign tumors diagnosed and/or treated within Mayo Clinic Rochester and Florida. The registrar must work with all departments in the institution to ensure complete case findings. The registrar must keep current with all changes and requirements of the American College of Surgeons in order to comply with their standards. The registrar will assist with the performance of epidemiology disease-related research including primarily the study of cancer for the Mayo Cancer Registry and, when applicable, the Minnesota Cancer Surveillance System (MCSS), Florida Cancer Data Systems (FCDS), and the State Health Registry of Iowa. Records are reviewed for both inpatients (patients admitted to a hospital) and outpatients (patients seen in a clinic, emergency room and other hospital facilities). Included in the medical record are reports of surgery, pathology, laboratory, genetics, and radiography, as well as documentation of treatment. From these documents, the cancer registrar prepares a summary or abstract for each cancer patient. The cancer registry abstract is the primary document on which the details of each diagnosed cancer (primary site) are recorded. Included are pertinent facts such as: demographics, medical history, social history, family history, diagnosis, diagnostic findings, cancer staging, cancer therapy, death information when applicable, and follow-up. Accuracy of abstracting is of utmost importance as physicians and scientists use our data to evaluate treatment methods and to find the most effective treatment for cancer. Additionally our data is compared to regional and national standards of care.
