Responsibilities

Mayo Clinic is seeking an outstanding Principal Health Services Analyst in a field such as Human Factors Engineering, Ergonomics, Industrial Engineering (not including operations research), Biomechanics or other related field. This individual will work on an Advanced Research Funding Agency for Health (ARPA-H) awarded project, Margin Diagnostics (MarginDx). The MarginDx project team will include Mayo Clinic's healthcare leadership and Illinois’ engineering and technological skills to advance the project. The goal of the MarginDx project is to develop precision surgical tools to help surgeons perform procedures accurately, providing real-time assessments for surgical decision-making in cancer care.

The candidate will be primarily mentored by Dr. Susan Hallbeck, a Professor of Health Care Systems Engineering within the Kern Center. Kern Center has nearly 200 staff members of whom 23 are PhD faculty, working on over 140 active projects in collaboration with over 120 practice partners across all Mayo Clinic sites. The candidate will work closely with Dr. Hallbeck, the leader of the Human Factor team of MarginDx project at Mayo Clinic. The Human Factors team of MarginDx project will aid in addressing all aspects of the technology form factor, footprint, and ergonomics, integration into the clinical setting and surgical patient workflow, to incorporate training and surgical simulations, evaluate communication patterns, information/data visualization, and sharing. This will ensure technology integration and adoption into the future standard-of-care.

Provides both lead and collaborative roles in multiple concurrent health services research evaluation projects. Applies scientific expertise to the design, implementation, analysis, interpretation and reporting of research, clinical and administrative studies. Defines the project's direction, scope and analysis plan. Acts as a co-investigator and is responsible for the overall management and analysis of multiple concurrent research projects intended to analyze practice patterns, provider-payer relations, health care utilization, cost effectiveness, physician profiling, risk adjustment, severity adjustment and episodes of care analysis, patient reported outcomes, and variation in clinical practice for the Mayo Clinic Enterprise. Has broad responsibility and accountability for multiple complex projects. Manages and resolves complex interrelationship among projects; determines resource requirements, organizes work and sets priorities. Provides health services research expertise for both Mayo Clinic and inter-institutional projects.

Qualifications

Ph.D. with 2 years of experience in Health Services Research, Health Economics, Public Health, Bio-Statistics, Operations Research, Epidemiology, Health Informatics or related fields. Must have substantial technical expertise in quantitative and/or qualitative analysis. Involves a high degree of autonomous decision making, judgment, and initiative. Able to identify issues/problems, initiate plans to address and make appropriate and timely decisions. Demonstrated management skills, including the ability to direct the management of complex projects and tasks and monitor progress. Must have strong teamwork, communication, organizational and interpersonal skills. Must tolerate a high degree of ambiguity. Knowledgeable of current health care delivery trends, economic and regulatory issues. Experience with large administrative and/or clinical databases preferred. Experience with statistical analysis software( SAS or Stata) preferred. Familiarity with coding (CPT, ICD-9) systems and risk adjustment methodologies preferred.

Works with general direction: receives general direction in terms of broad goals and overall objectives and is responsible for establishing the methods to attain them.

The preferred candidate will have:

  • Experience with conducting data collection in the operating room (e.g., observations, wearables, etc.)

  • Experience with human subjects, especially surgeons and surgical team members.

  • Familiarity with ergonomics and human factors standards especially in the design of medical devices

  • Experience working with wearable sensors and real-world data

  • Methodological expertise in survey construction, physiological signal processing and statistical analysis.

  • A background in research related to healthcare ergonomics is a valuable bonus.

  • Prior experience with publications, conference presentations, or grant applications in Human Factors and Ergonomics Engineering.

  • Eligible for or an Assistant Professor in Health Care Systems Engineering

  • Certification as a Professional Ergonomist (CPE) is highly recommended

Compensation Detail

$106,662.40 - $159,993.60 / year; Education, experience and tenure may be considered along with internal equity when job offers are extended.
