Responsibilities

The Nurse Practitioner (NP) or Physician Assistant (PA) hired into this position will have an integral role in our practice, seeing patients with neurologic and neurosurgical disease requiring acute care. This is an ideal role for a NP or PA to work with a high level of autonomy, with collaborative support as needed from our multidisciplinary team. We are a busy and dynamic practice requiring individuals with excellent communication, time management, flexibility, and critical thinking skillsets. We expect the individual hired into the role will actively contribute in further developing and optimizing the role as it continues to evolve. This will require individuals to demonstrate adaptability, leadership skills and a keen interest in quality improvement. The NP or PA serving in this role will see patients in the neuroscience ICU in collaboration with neurocritical care consultants, fellows, residents, RNs, and other supportive allied health staff.

The Neuroscience Intensive Care Unit (NICU) is a highly-specialized unit which provides care to adult critically ill neurologically-impaired patients, including head and spinal cord trauma and a wide variety of surgical procedures. Other common diagnoses include acute ischemic stroke, subarachnoid and intraparenchymal hemorrhage, meningitis, encephalitis, neuromuscular emergencies and status epilepticus. In addition, the unit provides care and support for patients and families going through the organ donation process. Intracranial monitoring and unstable spinal cord stabilization are unit-specific high-risk procedures. Prolonged EEG and state-of-the-art brachial plexus monitoring are two of the latest patient care technologies in place.

The NP/PA will participate in all aspects of care of the hospitalized patient including admissions, discharges, daily rounds and patient education and will be expected to participate in clinical research, education, and quality improvement initiatives. Ideal candidates for the NP/PA position with neurocritical care have an extensive medical and neurologic knowledge base, inpatient medical experience, and a continual desire to learn and grow as a health care provider.
