Position description

The APP will work collaboratively with the adult Epilepsy Division of the Department of Neurology, and interact with physicians, nurses, and other allied health staff to provide high-quality patient care in the adult epilepsy monitoring unit (AEMU) at St Marys Hospital. Patients are admitted to the AEMU service as an essential step in epilepsy surgery planning, in assisting in the maintenance care of patients with intractable epilepsy, and in order to establish a definitive epilepsy diagnosis. The APP will be mentored closely by Epilepsy Consultants. Admissions are elective and occur Monday through Friday.

Primary Responsibilities

The APP will manage the AEMU Inpatient Service during the day, including:

  • Performing admission and completing discharge summaries for patients admitted to the AEMU Service

  • Rounding daily on patients admitted to the AEMU Service in conjunction with the Epilepsy Consultants and Fellows

  • Addressing patient needs that develop during the hospital stay on the AEMU service

  • Prescribing home-going medications, as appropriate

  • Ordering medications, procedures and tests

  • Reviewing follow-up studies and test results

  • Coordinating appropriate follow-up after discharge

  • Assisting in outpatient epilepsy patient management prn

  • Checking out to the night time call coverage at the end of the work day

Qualifications

Masters prepared graduate of an accredited school of nursing and Nurse Practitioner program. Current Minnesota RN license and certification as a FNP, ANP, or ACNP.

Or graduate of accredited Physician Assistant program with current PA certification by NCCPA and registration as a PA by the Minnesota Board of Medical Practice.

Must be eligible for DEA registration and billing privileges.

Additional qualifications

Strong written and oral communication skills are required and must have demonstrated skill in working collaboratively with all members of the healthcare team. BLS certification and DEA registration required.
