Position description Medical Oncology is looking to hire a Nurse Practitioner (NP) or Physician Assistant (PA) into the Gastroenterology Oncology Care Team.
The Nurse Practitioner (NP) or Physician Assistant (PA) will be an integral part of our adult Medical Oncology outpatient practice, seeing adult patients with gastrointestinal malignancies as part of our GI care teams.
NPs and PAs are an integral part cancer at Mayo Clinic. They see patients at initial consultation and follow established patients, guiding them through their treatment plan in close collaboration with supervising oncologists. The NP or PA manages treatment-related toxicities for patients who are going through standard and research-based chemotherapy/immunotherapy as well as provides care and support for patients during all aspects of their disease course. This includes ordering of curative intent therapy, survivorship care, management of long-term treatment-related toxicities, assessment for cancer regression/progression/recurrence, clinical trials enrollment and end-of-life care.
Due to the complexity and breadth of the patient population, the ideal NP/PA candidate requires a commitment to challenging and complex patients, excellent communication and assessment skills, as well as the ability to balance treatment with symptom management and psychosocial support. The individual NP/ PA will work within the focused GI Oncology Care Teams. The GI group has 5 teams comprising of Consultants, NP/PAs, RNs and other allied health. GI has 5 subspecialty focus areas including: Colorectal, Gastroesophageal, Pancreatic, Hepatobiliary and Neuroendocrine cancers with goal to streamline patient care and clinical trial enrollment. The GI team anticipates this individual would work in the Pancreatic and Neuroendocrine subspecialty care teams but has the potential to see patients with any GI malignancy. The teams work in close collaboration with colleagues from Gastroenterology, Surgery, Radiation Oncology, Palliative Care, and other multidisciplinary teams. The NP/PA will have a central role on the team to provide continuity for patients, serve as a provider resource for nursing and help with coordination of care across multidisciplinary teams.
All NP/PAs in Oncology will provide back-up coverage to our Acute Clinic serving Oncology outpatients presenting with acute symptoms, on average 1-2 times/year. This would not be expected until after the NP/PA has been working in the division for 2 years.
Once established clinically, the division and tumor group are very supportive of mentoring NP/PAs in other academic and research pursuits. We strive to see our Advanced Practice Providers excel in clinical practice, research, and education shields.
